Hi,

Last week I got a 4 month West Highland Terrior. He is almost house trained, very happy go lucky little guy. The problem comes when I take him out for a walk. He won't walk on the lead. I have tried coaxing him with treats but he will still only walk about 10 feet slowly, and sit again. The thing is as soon as I turn around to come home he takes off and walks back perfectly. Any ideas how to get around this?

Is it just that he is insecute maybe? Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Deirdre

Just a little suggestion. I had the same problem with Toby. He didn't seem to care about the treats so I switched from regular dog treats to small bits of ham. He was much more cooperative. I also gave him lots of praise while he was walking so he knew he was doing what I wanted. It didn't take long before I was able to stop giving treats and now he walks great.

I would try driving a little distance from your home and get him to walk back or if he is light enough carry him the distance and get him to walk home, he obviouse wants to return home, so by doing this you are getting him to walk the direction he wants to go til he gets used to the lead. Just a thought it may work.
