Jude, who is normally a great eater- is teething and has suddenly stopped eating his food (he is on Taste of the Wild ATM). It was so sudden. One night he ate fine and the next morning he wanted nothing to do with his food. I sent him to daycare without eating figuring he'd eat at lunch and he didnt, and then he didn't eat dinner either. This was last night. I fed him a scrambled egg and some plain yogurt with pureed dog food for dinner and he ate it, which made me feel like my theory was right- his teeth were hurting.

This morning he refused to eat again. I worried he was sick. He ate an egg and I bought him some good quality canned food and he ate that happily, again, making me think it's his molar's that are falling out this week. His gums seem sore. Of course, for the last day and a half he's been having diarrhea and I don't know what to do. I feel so torn! I feel like if I feed him he's getting stomach sickness and if I don't feed him he'll get sick too. Any tips?

Hey Jude,

That sounds terrible! You can try some things here...

See if he will chew on some ice to ease the teething pain.

Try soaking a face cloth in water, then roll it and freeze it. When it gets frozen give it to him to chew on. It should help with the teething pain and sore gums.

Also try giving him some baby food. There's a good chance he may eat that.

He hasn't gotten vaccinated lately, has he?

Are you in touch with the vet??

Keep us updated!

I had similar problems when Finn was teething. I got Finn a puppy teething ring :p Froze it, he chewed on it happily. I also soaked his kibble in warm water to soften it, he gobbled it up easily.

It seems like some pups go through teething without any second thoughts, while others feel discomfort more.

Snuggles to Jude!

Since the two posts above me already mentioned what I would have, I will just add that you may want to mix in a little bit of pumpkin for the diarrhea. You can get the canned stuff from the grocery store year round.... just make sure you don't accidentally pick up pumpkin pie mix like I did once!

I agree to just soak his dry food to make it softer on his sore teeth ... that way there's no change in his diet so you don't risk a tummy upset instead ...

It may not be teething.......I feed TOTW as well. The last bag I had, 4 of my dogs ate and 3 hours later were vomitting.......the other two dogs (I have 6) refused to eat that night.
I had already purchased a second bag (purchased a different day and I knew it was a new shipment), and it was also on Christmas eve.........I threw out the remaining food in the bag and opened the new one with no problems. I have contacted the store and let them know along with giving them the code from the bag.

Luckily my dogs were not sick for very long, nor did they require vet care. But I am sure that there was something wrong with the food.

I don't like the sounds of this suggestion. It could create bad habits, and/or future problems..........we just had a dog here (Morgan) go through surgery for chewing/swallowing part of a towel

Sounds like many other good suggestions to try though :) And I agree with Adojrts too.........sometimes it's just a bad batch of food/or the company switches things on us without warning

Whatever the case, I hope little Jude can get some relief *sends vibes*

aw , poor lil guy!

i added some warm water to his food when mine was teething and it definitely helped him eat his food just fine, with minimal or no pain while chewing, and that was he didnt get sick either since he didnt have to change his diet.

good luck! :)
