Our elephant at the Anchorage Zoo is a big attraction as well as a national debate as she is alone and elephants are pack/family animals.

To my knowelege no circus has ever visited Alaska.

I do rmember when the "Lipizon"(SP) Stallions visited my area of NC. We went nuts to try and get one of the Stallions boarded at the farm I worked on. We lost out on hosting for what ever reason or other.

There are Zoos and then there are zoos.!!! Ours is A+ ....all natural open habitat . The elephant grounds have rocks, pools , grasses etc. They just birthed their latest baby , Now up to a pack of 12 and area has room for 17 . They definately are a pack and it's so much fun to see all of them make over a new arrival !!! She should be out with them all briefly in about a week . Can't wait to see her and her first outside experiences !! They are soooo cute with their encounter with the water !!

Good work, Jess! :D

Did anyone find the original of the second photo? (I haven't read through the rest of the thread yet . . . I just caught this as I had to leave last night.) The story about the Hyena people is interesting . . . gotta find out more about them.

Anyway . . . to paraphrase from Robert W. Service's The Cremation of Sam McGee . . . (http://www.robertwservice.com/modules/library/article.php?articleid=30)

There are strange things done in the Afrikan sun
By the men who would magic mold.
The desert trails have their secret tales
That will make your blood run cold;
The blazing glare has stopped to stare
At the wild things stalking the streets
The hyenas prowl and the baboons howl
At the Beast who walks on two feet.

I read a fascinating book, written by a man who travelled to Africa and became immersed in the African world of spirits and wizards and Shamans. It was a treatise on non-violence. I'll have to find the title and author - it's at the house somewhere. It is definitely a completely different world . . .

Definitely, PuppyLover. IMO all animals deserve protection from cruelty. Including dogs, including cats, including monkeys, and including hyenas.
exacly, thats why i hate animal testing, whats the point of tourturing a thousand animal to save a few humans lives, people do care for each over but these animals are tortured for few reasons, it does make me cry. i now someone whos dad works in an animal testing lab, she said her dad cuts open rats then puts cream on them to heal them, it makes me sick. i also found out that if they had tested antibiotics on guniea pigs it would have killed them so we wouldnt have them, it makes me so sad
