I'll try to make this short. I adopted a 2yr old Min Pin about 3 months ago. He came to us extremely overweight and was eating Purina Little Bites. We switched him to Purina Beneful and found out he is allergic to it. So we switched him to Purina One Sensitive Systems. He gobbled that right up from the get go and then all of a sudden he won't eat it. He puts his nose in the air as if to say "I'm not eating THAT"! We let him skip three feedings before we starting really freaking out and checked his teeth to make sure no problems there and found nothing wrong with him. We offered a doggie treat to see if he was sick, but he danced all around and gobbled that up like it was gold. We even bought wet food to mix with the dry food and he turned his nose in the air about that one too. We even chopped up his doggie treat and put it in a bowl and he wouldn't eat it that way. Why is he doing this?? It's almost like a game. Any thoughts???? Should we just let him starve until he gets hungry enough to eat again?? He does still drink water, gets 5 walks a day and is peeing and pooping just fine. HELP!

I agree, switch to something else. Purina is not a very good food anyway... So if you're going to switch him, get him on something like Innova, Canidae, Eagle Pack, etc. I tried to switch my new dog from Purina to Nature's Variety, and he got sick. Then, he stopped eating all together. But yesterday, I got him some Innova Evo and he seems to like that. It hasn't made him sick yet either. The point is, there are lots of good foods out there, just switch around until you find one he likes. You can get free samples if you email the manufacturers. If his tummy gets upset, just give him some yogurt and canned pumpkin. Good luck!

Melissa mentioned some great foods. I feed Eagle Pack.

Roxy doesn't eat just "kibble". SHe's a princess and she'll only eat if wet food is involved.

With the whole dandruff issue, I started mixing some Herring Oil in with their food. And they LICK the bowls clean! Even if there's just kibble in there!

So perhaps switch to a better food and just mix in some fish oil. The Omega 6 is great for healthy coats and skin, immune systems and it makes them eat!

Royal Canin makes a food for fussy eaters called Mini Special

Eagle Pack Chicken Holistic is one the fussy dogs will eat too

Chicken Soup is well liked

Nature's Variety is well liked

Sold Gold Wee Bits is too

If you want to stick with Purina. Pro Plan is their better line and is tasty. But is not as good as the above mentioned.

I know that Canidae is not a favorite of the small breeds. The kibble is a little large, but it's great for the price and your dog may love it.

We've been feeding Canidae to our mini dachshunds since they were ~8-10 weeks old and they have always loved crunching away at the kibble.

Wow! Thanks for the replies. He started eating again Friday when we mixed his dry food with the wet food. Of course we already tried this, but I think his tummy finally said "enough is enough, we're eating"! He's still eating the same dry food with a spoonful of the wet food. After re-thinking this "I don't want to eat that" attitude it did remind me that I've had to switch the kittie's food about 5 times in the last 10 years. So I guess they just get tired of it or something. I wish they could talk!!!

I'm really glad he started eating again. I do also suggest changing to a better quality food, though.

buster won't eat raw chicken. i can;t feed him any canned food because he throws it up as he wasn't bought up on it. you could try homade dog food. its has a lot more nutrition and probably tastes better than slop from a can.

i brown mince, add chopped tomato, carrot, mushroom and a little capsicum, chicken stock, tomato paste, egg. then cook some rice or pasta and put that it. then add some cat biscuits at the end

this way you know exactly what your dog is eating. its a bit more mucking around though.

or you could try small bits of chopped raw meat. buster gets too nervous to eat sometimes. you feed him. all the other dogs tuck in and he just sits beside his bowl looking anxious. he snaps at the other dogs if they come over but doesnt have a problem with people so i have to feed him by hand when he gets bones and stuff

lol a bit more muckng aroudn but they deserve it.

I have been reading A LOT of the food questions and that Mordy seems to know the scoop! I forgot to mention in my last thread that I was still seeking better food for Duke. Thanks again for everyone's replies.
