help, my dog has weak hocks

i have a large 15 year old retriever who has weak hind legs and hips . can you suggest some kind of practical nonslip flooring so he wont be scrabbling with his front paws while im trying to lift the back part. im experiencing major difficulty as he 's over 40 kg.. and i myself am not the fittest person.

Do you have hardwood or vinyl floors or is he having difficulty on carpet also?

we had carpet before but as the dog is incontinent, he has soiled the carpet and we had to remove it because of the odour.. the present flooring is woodlaminate in the bedroom and ceramic tiling in the living areas..

I would try to get some of that rubber flooring, they use at dog shows, just put strips in the area your dog is most likely to walk about its not very attractive though., the type of flooring you have at the moment is not ideal for a dog with leg and hip problems I personally have managed to get hold of some rugs that are quite large, that has a rubber backing(bit like bathroom mats) they do hold on laminate and tiles (that is what I have) and they can be washed too.

i place 4 pieces of large carpet tiles , but when he scrabbles, his feet pushes them away.. eventually his front feet manage to get on the part of the floor that has no mats..its most frustrating as i have a bad back and weak knees. a few times we both flopped on the floor totally exhausted, by which time he had already dont his poo and a lot of pee leaked out...sigh...do you think i should try to string those mats together? i cant get much bigger pieces and they are heavy to move around the room.. he wont sit in one place.

How about the rugs you would use in a bathroom that have a rubber backing so they won't slip. If they get soiled, you can wash them.

I had this with my old Golden . I bought the flannel they use on the bottom of toddlers sleepers ( with the plastic dots ) and made booties for him . Lifting up helps if you use a towel around the middle . Bless your baby !

I had the same problem with my last RB Collie (Timmie), he had arthritis in his hips and when it got worse all fours would splay out from under him on the kitchen floor (vinyl) as he walked from the carpted area to the vinyl area to his dish. He weighed close to 80 lbs and he could not get up by himself and he began not going into the kitchen. So, I had some carpet remnants and duct taped them to the floor (another great use for duct tape )
Or you could use double sided carpet tape on the underneath side. I just made a path across the kitchen floor very neatly.
