Hi, i have two jack russel pup's, Maggie & Pippa. they are sisters from the same litter, they are 5 1/2 months old, They are pretty much house trained, and rarely have accidents, pippa is the smaller of the two is all white apart from brown ears and a brown "pip" on top of her head in the center, Maggie the bigger, is completely white (which ive heard is rare for jack russels)

Anyway, Pippa is fine, she knows her name, and comes when you call her,and we can let her off the lead on walks, Maggie on the otherhand is a different story, we have to keep maggie in an extendable lead, so she can run around, but we cant let her off the lead like we can with pippa, as she just runs away, at the first sign of somthing interesting (Human,Dog,Cat  )

For a time we though she was deaf, as i had read that pure white dogs, are somtimes deaf, anyway we did some test (seperated from pippa) and turns out her hearing is fine, the only thing maggie reacts to, is the word "treats" whenever they have been good (on walks ect) we give them doggie treats, so when we call treats she comes running, but the problem is she dosent react to her name, which we cant understand, when we call pippas name, she will look at you, and come if you tell her, but maggie just seems not to understand her name, you can be stood right infront of her and yell "MAGGIE" and she doesent even look at you, but if you make stupid noises or clap or shout "treats", she will look, ive tried everything to get her to learn her name, like keep saying her name till she looks then giving her a treat and a pat, but its not working?? What can i do? is there somthing wrong with her? :(

Those are the cutest pups!
Weird that she doesn't know her name though. Maybe she does but doesn't like it.

Chazhound - what can I say? I've always maintained that an animal has to have the right name! Maybe Maggie's name is really 'Treats!'

It sounds like Maggie's not stupid, just stubborn! With a Jack Russell that's the more likely scenario. That is really strange, though, I've never been around a dog that wouldn't respond to it's name.

I'll have to think about this one, and in the meantime, maybe Serena will come up with a good solution.

To now its name a dog has to have soemthing to assocaite it with. For instance your dog has figured out when you say the word treats he is likely to get some thing so he reacts to it and looks at you or comes to you. You need to form the same association with his name. Start by saying his name while silmultaneously showing ahim a treat and drawing it up to your eyes so he makes eys contact. When he looks at you say YES and give him a treat. After you've done this for a bit you can fade out the treat and just use the same hand motion. THe try it when he isn't looking at you. Here is a link that may help you. www.clickerlessons.com/attention.html

hope this helps!
