HELP! My 6 1/2 month old Westie, Harlow, developed a bump on her inner front leg where it bends. This one irritated bump began to spread so I took her to the vet. He shaved the area and gave me this wormwood ointment and some special shampoo (he's a holistic vet). Well, after only a few applications the area greatly improved, though a couple of times a new bump would appear and then disappear. Anyway, since then there are other bumps that have appeared, on her neck and her inner back leg. I also notice black flecks around the "bite" area, though I can't be sure this is not specks of scab material from her scratching. I have examined her and examined her and I can't see any creatures, but something's up. To make matters worse, my scalp is really itching. I swear there are creepy crawlers on my head, but I can't see anything. I've been taking Harlow to a dog park starting a few weeks ago. My holstic vet really didn't say anything useful and didn't give a diagnosis. I think both she and I have some kind of parasite that dogs and people share. Mites? I'm freaking out and haven't said a word (yet) to my boyfriend (we live together) cause he's the ultimate priss about cleanliness issues and he's gonna have a meltdown. Anyone have experience with this? If she does have mites, how is it treated? I hate the thought of dousing her with poisonous chemicals at her young age. I hate the thought of dousing me with poisonous chemicals. If anyone recognizes what this might be, I'd love to hear from you.

How about taking her to a vet who will give you a diagnosis?

I called my vet right after posting my message. He was willing to see her right away. He says she doesn't show any evidence of any kind of parasite. He even examined my head and said it looks perfect. She definitely does have some welts on a couple areas of her body and black specks around the bumpy areas, but he says the specks are scab material she's been scratching and the welts are hard to trace - maybe excessively dry skin, maybe food allergies. I'm just relieved to be assured that it's not a parasite. We're in the process of readying our house for sale and we're utterly crazed and exhausted with all the work involved. The thought that the family could now be infested with some kind of parasite would have been so disheartening right now.
