Hi my dog stays in my bedroom with me, he isnt aloud in the rest of the house but he has a huge garden to himself. by the way im on the ground floor and i have the back door in my bedroom

i have a bunk bed in my room a double on the bottom n single on the top.

i sleep on top and i store all my spare stuff on the bottom. but while i step out my room for even a minute he will climb up on the spare bed what hasnt got stuff on it.

it is black with dirt and mud now as i cant keep him off it while im out.
yes i consider putting more stuff on it but thats not really curing the problem, he will still do it at a new house wont he on the sofa etc.

he doesnt dare do it while im there as he noes its mine. but as soon as i step out the door he does it.

is there any way i can stop this? Help!

Have you ever considered training him not to get up there?

Or you could confine him in an exercise pen or a crate while you're not there.

Someone was telling me a story once about their dog sleeping on the couch when they left. She said she'd walk in the door and hear a thud. Go into the living room and there is the dog sleeping on the floor. She puts her hands on the couch and it's still warm from him sleeping up there. What she did and i highly do not recommend, was used mouse traps. She would set them and put them on the couch. When she left, when the dog would jump up there, he'd get snapped with traps and eventually stopped.

But I DO NOT recommend that method!!
With my dogs, I don't allow them on the couch or beds. The only time they get up there is if i call them up them. They get down when I tell them to and up when i tell them too. If they get up there without my permission, I tell them to get down. Maybe you should try crating when you have to leave the house. Or keeping your door closed so your dog can't get on the bed.

Milo waits for an invite onto the couch or bed if I'm home, but I don't know that I could expect him not to climb up there when I'm gone.

On the other hand, he does seem to prefer his crate to the couch on most occasions (with the door open, even) and I keep him as clean as possible to avoid damage to the furniture.

I've seen contraptions at pet stores designed to keep cats off furniture. I suppose you could use one of those, but I think you would need a flat surface to make it work and if you are storing things there, it might not.

Maybe this is a larger training question. Does the dog jump up when you are there or does he wait for an invitation? Have you provided an alternative sleeping place that is just as inviting? A big fluffy bed or a well-equipped crate? The dog needs better alternatives.

Leo will sneak up on the couch to grab one of the kids' toys if no one is watching. If I'm in the family room with him, he won't do it, but if he sees their toys up there, he bides his time...

I know they make these things that make a hideous high pitch noise when a dog/cat jumps on them.........they sort of look like a heating pad.

Maybe that will help?

NP, I had forgotten about them till you mentioned it ;)

They also make more uh 'friendly' mouse trap thingies for dogs.. So they make a slapping noise rather than the ability to pinch the dog. Not sure I'd ever go there though. I saw them at petsmart..

I think the thing is that he's learnt not to get caught on the bed, he doesn't know not to get on the bed. Busters Knows not to eat my food if I leave it on the ground because its much more rewarding not to take it then to take it even if he doesn't get caught.

I taught him "leave it" whiel I ducked out of the room for 2 seconds and gradually increased the time till now I can put my freshly made dinner on the loungeroom floor, go get a drink, go to the toielt if need be nd come back and he hasn't moved.

So if you come back into the room and he ISN'T on the bed, praise praise praise. He'll soon learn that staying off is way more rewarding.

I'd also like to suggest keeping him cleaner.. wiping paws, brushing, and if necessary hosing down before coming inside.. if your bed looks like that after a few times I'd hate to see your carpet.

Most people have kitchens to dry them off in but as he isnt allowed to go in the kitchen it has to happen.

and even if i step out the room to go get a damp clothes i need not bother because he did it on the bed. and i do clean you no,
