Hi . . . if you can't tell by me posting in the Member Introductions forum, Penny and I are new. Penny is an almost 8 month old Cocker Spaniel and her middle name is "Lets See If I Can Cause Mommy To Get More Gray Hairs Today".

I made a mistake and purchased Penny from a pet store and that is something that I will never, ever do again. I love the little one more than I could ever express, but she has had quite a few problems. Will probably tell you her whole life story in a few other threads, but since I am at work I have to keep it short. I am a word processing operator for a law firm, love animals and -- sorry for that, but had somebody behind me who wanted his work done. Talk about nervy!!!! Well will end this post as I can't remember what I was about to say. Something else you need to know about me....bad memory, VERY bad memory.

Hello & Welcome from Bailey & I :)

You should not feel bad or be sorry for buying Penny from a Pet Store. I think you saved her, she could have eventually ended up in a shelter & put down. So you should be glad that you are giving her a wonderful life. I adopted my Bailey 1 month ago from a Shelter. Where I live they are not allowed to sell dogs or cats at the pet stores, but they have the Humane Society's and other Pet Adoption places come into the Petsmart & Petco stores on the weekends to try & get the dogs & cats adopted. So that where I found Bailey. What kind of problems does she have? Let us know & I am sure a bunch of people will chime in with ways you might be able to handle or correct those problems.

Well to start, when I picked Penny up from the petstore, she was shaking, scared to death and I thought it was because of all the noise in the store. I am not sure how long they have had her since she was 12 weeks old, but I felt so sorry for her because she was so scared. She didn't come to me, which should have been a big clue but it just didn't click.

When I took her to the vet, he checked her out and said that I would need to immediately start socializing her as she could end up being scared aggressive (or whatever that term is). She was afraid of everything.....and I mean EVERYTHING. She was afraid of new things, new people, things in the house moved in spots that it typically isn't, afraid of all animals, just a poor terror stricken puppy. I started taking her to puppy classes as soon as she got her shots, started taking her to PetSmart before her puppy classes and walking around for an hour, letting people come up to her and pet her and I started taking her to the dog park too. She has finally gotten to the point where she enjoys going to PetSmart, she actually walks up to people, with her tail wagging (she still walks up to people slunk down, but she is improving), she wasn't too thrilled with the puppy classes because at the PetSmart where she had her puppy classes, they used an intercom, there were those crate moving truck thingies, that were noisy and beeped, and a lot of times the puppies that were there to be adopted would be barking. It all scared Penny. She now will actually walk up to people at the dog park and jump up to be petted (I know, bad but she is only 15 lbs), and the last time I took her to the dog park she actually played with the dogs for a short time. :) You don't know how much of an accomplishment that is.

She is still terrified of riding in the car except when we are leaving some place that she doesn't like, then she seems to forget her fear, still afraid of anything new and doesn't like to go out the front door (which is a good thing) during the daytime. She will walk outside with me when it is dark because there are no cars driving down the road at 2:30 a.m. typically.

Problem two is that she has colitis according to the vet, but I have been giving her small amounts of cottage cheese and boiled egg every night and that seems to have stopped her from throwing up.

I think she also has allergies because her eyes are gunked up (will be taking her to the vet tomorrow) and it has been continuous gunked up eyes.

I am glad that I had already made the decision before picking Penny up from the pet store not to breed her because I would have been extremely upset finding all the problems she has that I would not want to pass on through her line. I don't know if those types of problems can be hereditary or not, but still glad she is spayed.

That is one problem.

Hi & welcome from Ace and I. I'm glad to hear you adopted Penny from the pet store. I also got Ace from a pet shop. I thought he was too young to be winged from his mother, let alone for sale! Anyway Ace seemed very scared as well, but eventually grew out of that as much as I "smothered" him w/kisses, love and attention. :) About 2 or 3 mos later I was in that area where the shop was & stopped to get him more dog food. When I pulled up he was already acting scared. He literally clawed me to death when we came up to the door & went inside! I figured something must have happened there to him or he thought he was going back??!! I know this sounds scary but it makes you wonder sometimes what they do to animals there, or what someone might have done while "shopping"??

I think it's good you got Penny socialized. I did the same for Ace and he loves kisses & giving lots of them. I will say this about him, I trust his insticts or reactions to people. If he's upset or scared I will not be around that person, especially w/him. I say always trust what they're feeling or reacting around people. Dogs are very smart !!

I hope you enjoy talking w/all of us here. :)

Bailey and Ace are such cuties!!!! The big reason I would never buy from another pet store is because it is actually promoting the sale of dogs and cats and if nobody would buy from pet stores, then maybe dogs and cats wouldn't have to go through that tramatic experience and you would also have a better chance of getting a well adjusted, healthy puppy from a breeder.

TY I wouldn't trade her for the most expensive dog in the world. She is my bratty little baby. :)
