I was under the assumption that pregnant dogs don't go into heat. As soon as we got our foster rescue home, she started her heat (blood drips). That lasted about 2 weeks. I am absolutely 100% positive that she had no contact with male dogs. She never left the house. Not even to go outside. She is extremely fearful and we haven't worked up to outdoor walks yet. Her nipples began swelling, but i know nothing about female dogs so i just thought it was the heat. Is this normal?

Bonus Awful Side story:

She was spayed today. The vet's office called me a few hours after we dropped her off and asked if she was my dog. I said she was a foster dog. That was it. We go to pick her up, find out she was pregnant and they just did the spay without informing anyone (even the foster organization). My wife was devastated. They also charged us 3 times as much for our own dog's spay. I'm livid. I started dropping f bombs (4 of them) (in conversation with my wife, not directed at any staff) and walked out to the parking lot to cool down. my wife is already in tears because of their surprise abortion, and they tell her they're calling the police. (it's illegal to swear where i live) they called the foster organization and told them they will not do any more free spaying or neutering for them. because i swore. i am honest to god not simplifying my reaction to the story. i swore 4 times, i will admit it was loud but not screaming and not directed at anyone. and now the local animal welfare society will most likely go bankrupt. the vet gave us no info on how to care for the dogs. on the plus side we didn't have to pay 3x and the police weren't called (as far as i know, maybe they were called and laughed at the vet's office).

i hate this country.

Wow. I'm not sure, but I hope they rethink the help they give the rescue, I'm sure it was priceless.

Nothing to add except, bummer.

How long had you had this female in your home when you took her in for a spay? Did the vet say how far along she was in pregnancy when the spay was done?

We got her at the end of january and she was spayed today.

i just now figured this out. when we got her home, we thought she had just started her heat. but if she is pregnant then that heat must have been the one she got pregnant on. SO that means that the rescue organization lied when they told us she hadn't gone into heat yet. She was kept in a pen with 4 other males. They told us we needed to take her early because they thought she WAS GOING TO go into heat. So they KNEW she was in heat and still kept her in a pen full of males. We originally told them we could take her mid-march when we returned from a trip. That's why she was sprung on us so quickly.....

All of a sudden everything makes sense. Her behavior, the women at the A.W.A.....

they're supposed to be saving animals, not making MORE!

I hate this country!

Wow.... If that's the case she was quite far along... I am surprised they did the spay abort, she should have been showing some... You did not notice anything.... She actually should have been darn near due...

Depending on when the first of the month is... meaning..the 1stt or say the 6 th... She would have BEEN due... Odd...

we did notice her nipples earlier on. we had a vet look at her and he asked if she was pregnant. i said she couldn't be, because she was in heat. thinking she had gone through her entire heat in my care.

two or three days ago her nipples got really big, like over night. the wife said "she's pregnant" and i said yeah, well i didn't do it, and you didn't do it, then who? i guess in my head i just dismissed it, thinking the vet would be able to tell me what was going on. he didn't tell me a **** thing.

here she is. she has had the roughest life and she's not even two. she is so gentle and calm. she makes our other dog look like a crack head.

more pics

i'm looking up stuff about estrus and trying to get the timing right. she would have been 6-7 weeks. geez that is depressing. i think if the vet would have consulted us, we would have ended up deciding that it was the right thing to do, but to just go ahead and do it then tell us after....

it's been a long day.

It sounds as if people at the rescue didn't have much of a clue! And I'm really surprised that the vet did the spay without consulting either you or the rescue. That's odd. Layla looks so sweet and gentle. I hope she gets a lovely home, and soon.

We were talking about keeping her before all this started. I definitely won't be giving her back to the A.W.A. It is going to have to be someone i know very well for me to let her go. She was in a disgusting abusive situation before a client of mine stole her and brought her to the A.W.A. So she has a lot of issues we are working through. The more she accomplishes the more attached i get to her. I couldn't risk all the work we've done together by leaving her in this country. With such flagrant human rights violations just image what it is like for the animals here. (our other dog is another rescue)

Awful Side Story Epilogue
My wife called the vet today and they apologized, saying it was a miscommunication. They also said the staff member that dealt with my wife wasn't representative of the office and had no authority to cancel any agreements with the A.W.A.

The overreaction to my swearing came about from an earlier incident. a local (the most unbearably arrogant and ignorant people ever) called the police because a client (with an A.W.A. foster cat) was swearing. (at the same staff member) So the police are wary of this western establishment with their loose morals and i suppose their attitude toward animal welfare.

I hate this country.
