Yami has gotten into this "I'm going to steal anything I want" behavior the past week. He goes through the garbage can and takes all kinda of garbage scraps to his crate, he steals all my sisters candy she has and eats it, he rips open his treat box and eats all the treats and just now, I wanted some Oreo cookies and I couldnt find them anywhere. I found the wrapper in his crate. He ate the WHOLE bag, and I'm kind of scared for his life because thats a lot of chocolate he just consumed. And these Oreos were really high up. Like I have NO idea how he got to them. I dont know, hes just really making me angry.

Anything I can do? And do you think all that chocolate is going to hurt him?

He's acting like hes starving! He gets way more food than he should because I always think hes so skinny, and hes not, its just his build.

Chocolate is a toxin to dogs. Why is he able to get into all these things? Of course he's going to want to get into garbage and candy and food. That's how dogs are hardwired. It's how they got domestic....getting into garbage. LOL. He's being a dog...noting more or less, not naughty. You need to keep these things inaccessable to him, completely. Dogs always act like they're starving if there's something good around like people food, chocolate, garbage. Keep that stuff away from him or you're very likely to have one sick dog one day.

the thing is he never really did get into anything :(

Just kind of makes me mad, a bit.

Lady my dog used to always get in the garbage. She now cant because I got a garbage can where she cant get into. Lady steals alot of stuff to but I keep telling her and pushing her away from it. I believe in awhile she will learn. It takes practice.

As a young girl, I lost a beloved Schnauzer to chocolate. This was before vets even knew much about it. Someone had given me a huge chocolate easter egg and he ate the whole thing. As I look back in retrospect and remember how sick he was before we had him PTS, I just know that it was the toxic effect of chocolate that made my dog so critical ill unto death. Please, if you think that any chocolate is "out of the way" in your house, then put it even more out of the way. I keep anything chocolate in the fridge. I am very conscious about it, as it is toxic to both dogs and cats and I am correctly paranoid about them consuming it.

As for stealing, doesn't seem like he's stealing anything, just foraging. If he had a stealing skill, it would be all your watches, like one of my cats does. This skill could be really useful if you could only channel it to stealing OTHER PEOPLE's things. lol.

While I'm not expert trainer (in fact, I'm new), I'm really puzzled about what you've said. How did your dog manage to get hold of everythign you mentioned? Well, garbage scraps sounds reasonable, but sisters' candy? Treat box? Oreos? Shouldn't all these stuff be out of reach of your dog? How did he get them?

If your dog got a hold of all of that stuff, it is your fault for offering it to him!

Where did the Oreos come from? A cabinet? A shelf? If its a shelf, how are you so sure that it is too high? If it is a cabinet, can he open it? (Dogs are very, very smart) You can buy safety locks for cabinets (for children) and I'm sure those will help you keep him out of things.

Are you sure that no one else in your family is helping him get to this stuff?

Wondering exact same thing:confused:

You leave the garbage can door open and he is going to go straight for it. You leave food sitting on a bench that he can reach, even by standing on his hind legs, then he will get it.

There are measures you can take to ensure the dog can't reach these things. Make sure they are not accessible to him in any form. Essentially you have to doggy proof the house. Tell others that they have to keep their food stored out of reach to the dog, in a secure cupboard, up high. If the garbage can is in a cupboard then make it more secure by adding a child-proof lock.
