I have a Fox Terrier mix, he's about 4 and a half months old. I adopted him yesterday. He pooped outside for the 1st time when we jogged this morning. But he never peed so I waited outside for about 5-7 minutes to see if he would and I got nothing. Then about a minute after he came inside he was peeing on the carpet. This is the third time it's happened already. He just comes to my room and stands near my closet and pees. I tried to startle him as he was doing it today and he just looked at me and kept going. How often should I take a pup his age out? What am I doing wrong?

First, you have to post a pic :D

Second, it just takes lots of patience. The best you can do is let him out every 30 minutes, after playing, napping, eating, drinking. When he pees or poops outside, praise! Show him how happy you are (treats work too). Rince and repeat.

If he pees inside, if you see him, say a firm no, and take him outside. It doesn't really matter if he pees or not once outside, if he does, praise, if not just take him back in, but it will show him where he's supposed to pee. If you don't see him pee but you find the puddle, just clean it. Cleaning carpet is a pain though, and most products don't get rid of the smell totally (especially not for dogs), so if there is still a smell, he will naturally go back there to pee. So the best is to buy some nature's miracle, which is a product that gets rid of the smell even for dogs, and soak the carpet with it everytime he pees, to get rid of the smell.

Dogs are usually half housebroken at this age, but if he hasn't got any training it will take a while, but he should get it. It's easier after 4 months because they have a better control of their bladder, but it can take a few months.

Just keep in mind that patience is key, and lots of praise when he pees outside, so that he will want to do it again.

Just wanted to add that it may not be a good idea to jog a puppy until the growth plates have closed. You may cause damage to the bone and cartlidge jogging at this young of an age.

There's a mirror right next to where he always pees inside. Could it be that his reflection is scaring him or something?

Also, he hasn't had his last Parvo shot so I'm not supposed to take him out to the grass where other dogs could've been right? I don't have a yard so where do I take him to pee? The sidewalk maybe?

But i read that if I get him used to pee pads he'll want to go inside all the time. Is that true?

I know what you mean. Belly is EXACTLY like that but shes getting over it. He probaly already got used to feeling carpet before he pees so maybe when you're not surpevising him, keep him either in a crate or an area that doesn't have carpet. Or you could clip his leash to your belt or something so that wherever you go, he goes. Watch for signs he needs to go like sniffing the ground a lot or crouching. If he shows these signs, pick him up and take him out. Don't worry, he'll stop peeing once you pick him up. Good Luck! And don't forget the pics :D

He did pretty great today so far (besides the incident this morning). He peed outside at 2 pm and 4 pm. I've been taking him out every hour and saying "go pee". If he does he gets praise and a treat (a honey-nut cherrio). If not he goes straight into his crate and I try again in an hour. Sound good?

Pees on pad, but what about poops

Fran, I have an Italian Greyhound. He is just 10 weeks old. He is now peeing on the pee pads most of the time. But he still wants to poop elsewhere. He will sniff around the pads as if he knows that is where he should go, but then he goes overe to the corner and poops. Is there any tricks to get him to do both on the pads?

Lol, dont mean to laugh, because I know your frustration.

But I just have to share, I too have a 4 year old peke, who only pees on the carpet! Seriously, he has done this since 4 months old. I thankfully have an all tile house, but due to this, I cannot even have a throw rug anywhere, because he will pee on it.

Its aggrevating, and I hate it, but he only pees on a carpet!

He is why I have an all tile house!

Mine was like this for awhile. He would go on carpet. We learned that if we gated him in the kitchen, we couldn't leave throw rugs down, because he would go on them. On the screen porch, he would go on the door mat. Even in his crate, he would go if there was bedding in there. He could keep it dry and clean for an extended time if we didn't put bedding in it. We also tried getting him a nice pillow bed. He would use it for his toilet!!!
He did outgrow it eventually. However, just when we thought he had gone for a couple of weeks with no accident in the house (including carpeted areas of the house), we would put bedding in his crate or a throw rug down or even try to have the door mat back at the back door, and he would wet one of those. We had to wait until we were pretty sure we had gone several weeks or a month without an accident before we slowly started reintroducing welcome mats and crate padding!!

A puppy pad will not make him only pee inside. You train him on the pad, then slowly move the pad to the door, then outside.

Not all dogs will "stop peeing" when you pick them up either. I don't know where this info came from, but it's certainly not true of all dogs.

BTW, you don't want him to think his crate is a bad place. It's supposed to be a happy, safe place...from what I've heard. So crating him because he's in trouble may not be great. He'll end up thinking that every time he's put in his crate he did something bad.

Ask RedyreRottweilers or Mordy about training. Possibly Momof07

First of all you need to decide where you want your dog to pee (hopefully outside!) and then teach it to go there. Pads confused the dog. They don't necessarily understand that outside is ok and so is inside but only on the pad. It can slow down the process a lot.

There are a lot of threads about housebreaking on the forum. You should look them up or start your own thread on the issue instead of bumping on from last year.

The crating is good the way you described it, as long as your attitude is good when you put him in. Don't put him in as a punishment, but as a prevention.
