my 7 month old pup is pretty much potty trained now she will whine at the door when she wants to go out and she has very little accidents. I think that she is growing into a very fine young dog but she has a minor problem, when my mom or new ppl go to pat her she gets the leaks. is there any thing that i can do to correct this problem? i dont want to punish her every time she does it b/c i dont want her to think its wrong to greet ppl but shes not learning from doing it either.

Also my dachound has taken up the very ANNOYING habbit of barking every time shes out. i think that she goes out JUST to bark now. my parents are going to invest in a muzzel if she dont cut it out. is that right or is there some thing else that i can do? i kno what u r going to say... that the barking comes with having a dog but shes not learning that she doesnt need to bark at a plastic bag, pups will be pups but she cant keep barking at every thing.. she does it at night and my parents are afraid that our neighbors are going to call the cops on us.

I've known people that have "Happy Leak" dogs. What needs to be done, is you instruct new people/visitors/etc. to TOTALLY ignore the dog. Don't even LOOK at him/her. Maybe later in the visit they can offer a quick pat on the head and that's it -- preferrably upon their leaving your place. This has worked every time. Your dog won't freak out and have an uncontrolled bladder with this kind of "greeting"...

As for the Dachsund barker... has it always done this or is it a new thing? I would think about a muzzle to break him/her of the habit of doing this. Or, I hear they have shock collars that give a mild sensation they don't like upon a bark. I would say the latter is an extreme, though. Like, what if another dog barks and sets the poor dog's collar off?

Your pup will most likely grow out of her 'happy leaks' after awhile. It's usually a young dog thing, although occasionally you'll run into a mature dog who still does it.

Can you think of anything that might have happened or changed right before your Dachsund started this barking behaviour? That's usually a key to an easier fix.

In the meantime, distract you Doxie when the barking starts. When she starts, tell her to sit, then you can praise her for sitting properly. Get her attention and turn her in the opposite direction, entice her to play with a toy, just something to defuse the situation. DON'T reward her with the attention until she's properly executed her sit though. Otherwise she's getting rewarded for barking, which is exactly the opposite of what you want to accomplish.

And do remember, a dog's gotta bark SOMETIME! Even the cops will tell people that. They don't like people who call them over moronic, trivial annoyances like that. The animal control will tell them the same thing.

Could it be that your Dachsund thinks she has to be extra protective of the pup?

My neighbour once called the police on my family just because we had 3 dogs, and that one of our dogs would be placed by the front door time to time. I caught her lookin' at my dog when I came to play with it a bit.. wonder why she ever called them.

Most dogs will grow out of this, my parents' retriever was a frequent 'leaker' when he got excited, but he hasn't done that in years now. I think it took him until he was two or three to completely break the habit, but it did stop without much work on the issue from us.

Shiva was a piddler too. I kept stacks of newspapers handy. Thankfully she quit by the time she was a year old! Her piddle puddles weren't your ordinary puppy piddles, lol!

Sadie is going on 4 yrs old and she still is a leaker. She gets excited or nervous and she will 'leak'. I don't think she'll ever outgrow it. As for the barking, both my dogs will go out barking before they even know what their barking at. Its not a continous barking though, its more like a "hey, I'm out and watch out" thing. lol Sadie has a thing against trash barrels. Our trash pickup day is Tues. and I try to get her out either real early or later when there isn't so many trash barrels on the neighbors curbs. HEHEHE She will sit there and bark at the barrel. Its really comical if you think about it. But then I'll yell out and she'll stop and come back wagging her stubby tail. I guess its just behaviors we all have to come accustomed to. Nobody's perfect :) Sadie and Nora will play on eachother too. One barks and the other looks over and thinks "heck don't know why she's barking but, I will too!" They are so cute together.
