the other donation thread reminded me of this.

well last year I was a senior and went to prom obviously lol

The dress (pictured above) was tailor made. I didn't want to run the risk of anyone showing up with the same dress, so I let my mom go nuts and she took my measurements and had a dress made for me

well back to the point, after prom I realized that I would never wear the dress again ( I didn't even really like it that much to be honest) so I donated it to this program that I found that gives prom dresses to girls who can't afford them

When i dropped off my dress, I attached a post-it note to it with my email, hoping the girl that got the dress would email me :)

well she did!! and I felt so happy when I got her email, she LOVED LOVED LOVED the dress, it was exactly what she wanted and she said she had the best prom, got so many compliments and had a great time etc.. she told me about her family and her struggles and why she couldn't afford to pay for a dress but that she was SO thankful that somebody donated a dress like that lol I couldn't believe she was talking about THAT dress, the one I didn't even like that much. Well she even sent me some pictures and went on and on about how it was FATE and the dress fit her perfectly, which to me is amazing because the dress was my exact measurements

we were even the same SHOE size! lol I have to admit.. donating the shoes with the dress hurt a little, I really did like those shoes, but the shoes were made for the dress so they belonged together

well.. it made me happy that I made her happy so I wanted to share :)

First, you're gorgeous and that's a great dress.

Second, good job on you for donating it to a worthy cause!

Ditto Eddie, you're beautiful.

And yeah, that's really awesome that you donated it, not everyone does, and what a waste if you don't. Plus giving away the shoes that you liked, you're really selfless.

It's also great that the girl was gracious enough to reply and that she enjoyed it. Does the dress go back into the program or does she keep it or what?

thank you :) and as for the dress, they asked me wether I wanted the dress to stay in the program or go to the new girl permanently and I told them to just let her decide.
she did return it to the program though, so my dress will soon enough be seeing another prom lol

as for donating dresses, I think its a fabulous idea. ask any woman, most of us never wear the same dress twice. especially when it comes to prom dresses or bridesmaid dresses or things like that, and prom is such a fun stepping stone for girls, every girl should have the opportunity to have a pretty dress

I think the dress looked soo great on you and I LOVE it... I am usually not a fan of red but I would totally wear that dress.

I think what you did was great and those programs are amazing... allowing someone to go to Prom that otherwise might not have the chance. Glad you got to hear back from her.

My gf is looking into donating her dress but not sure a good way of how to. A way to where she would know it got worn and not tossed into some nasty salvation army bin. She paid a fortune for it and wants it to go to some special event. Any ideas?

I just googled "dress donation" and my city and found the program. many innercity/public schools are a part of it

this seems like the biggest/most popular one tho: Free Prom Dresses - Prom and Bridesmaid Dress Donations - DonateMyDress.org

That's awesome Fran!

I donated my wedding dress to Brides Against Breast Cancer--they do trunk shows where all the money goes to cancer research. I would have loved a picture of the girl who bought my dress though--what a great thing to do :)
