Toby has some hairs on his eye. They don't seem to be bothering him, but they are freaking me out  . Is there something I can do? Can I use eye drops on him?

I have used boric acid to wash out my dogs eyes before. Or you could try steril eye wash. Maggie gets her hair stuck in her eyes and it grosses me out. Thankfully hers is still attached. It never seems to bother her, but she seems happy when it is gone.

It was loose. Eventually it worked its way off. I was worried because it was there for a long time.
But if I need to in the future, eye drops are ok?

Yes, eye solutions are fine. When I had dogs in the past with dry eye I used human eye drops for my dogs eyes. Much cheaper than purchasing high priced eye solutions at the Vet clinic.
Or you can make your own Astringent Eyewash
Use a clena dropper bottle, combine the following:
1/2 tsp cooled clear raspberry leaf or nettle tea
1/2 tsp of Oregon grape or goldenseal tea
add 1 oz of sterile saline (available in the eye care section of supermarkets and pharmacies_
Shake the mixture thoroughly, it should be tinted yellow.
Make sure the tea is absolutely free of particles

thoroughly rinse the eye laterally from the nose outward, toward the dogs check. The idea is to wash any irritating particles away from teh animals eye. You can repeat this process 2-3 times daily until the irritating particle is removed.

Quote by filaRotten,
I assume this was an error on your part in quoting this. I would assume no one would use boric acid anywhere near a dogs eyes. Boric acid is toxic and it has warnings right on the label that it should not be inhaled, swallowed, or placed in the eye. At grooming facilities boric acid has been used for ear cleaning, but, you have to shield the face while using this and a pinch or two is used in the ear canal only. You have to be very careful when using this NOT to get it in the eyes or on the face...even open wounds or ears that may have a small cut we would never use it.

yes I did say boric acid. pharmacy grade boric acid can be used in a very diluted form as an eyewash. Don't know where you bought yours at. Look at the eyewash from the pharmacy or Baush and lomb. It does contain boric acid. Our horse vet many years ago suggested this if there was something in the eyes of our horse or dogs. However, It is much easier to keep the premixed eyewash around and that is what i use now. I also has many other uses.

Visine works just fine. Or some tap water with a tinsy bit of salt disolved in it (plain water burns like hades!). I too read that boric acid should never be used around dogs. So I just have never used it. No need to. Everybody at least has some tap water and salt. And it only take a teenie weenie drop in the eye to flush it out.
