I posted a while back that we had taken in a cat that was dumped at a friend's barn. Well, apparently there were 3 cats dumped--the one we have, a gray one that escaped me when we were getting the cat carrier, and a third cat--a good looking cat too--long haired tannish with brown points and tabby stripes. The cat was very thin, and was obviously starving, so we caught her thinking we would take her to the vet, get her cleared, and bring her home to keep with the other foster kitty, Tempi.

Sadly, when we took her to the vet we found that she had feline leukemia. since it's untreatable and so contagious the vet recommended euthanasia, which we agreed to.:( I felt so bad for her--she was a nice little cat and would have made someone a good companion.

I'm also a little scared too. Tempi tested negative for feLV, but the vet said that the incubation period for the disease can be long, so I'm a little concerned that she might have it (since we believe the cats lived together at one point). To top it off although she's gaining weight nicely she's been drinking and peeing a LOT, so we are taking her to the vet this week to check for diabetes...

Sorry for your loss :( I think you did the right thing, though, to keep the cat you already have safe.

Feleuk is not curable and IS highly contagious, so unless someone wants to risk it and put the vaccine to the test generally infected cats needs to be kept as only cats. They can live a decent life, but the problem is that no shelter will take a positive cat knowing its positive (since the entire cat population could become infected), and you can't really keep it at home unless your cat is currently fully vaccinated against it. The vaccine has to initially be given twice, 3 weeks apart, and so full immunity is not there until at least 6 weeks after the first shot. It also makes it hard for a cat recover from illnesses, and predisposes them to a variety of health issues.

I'm so sorry. :(

I hope everything is okay with Tempi. Cats and water -- ugh! I was so aware of water intake and "output" when I had mine.
