Today at 3.30pm the dogs were in the yard. The way it's set up, the gate is on the right when facing the house, but at the back of it. On the left side, the fence comes to the front of the house.

The gate is never locked, but we're always in the room that has a window next to the gate, so we can see if people come by. That, plus the dogs bark anyway when someone comes in the street, and they are never allowed in the yard when we're not home or can't pay attention to them anyway.

So today, it was back-from-school time, and as usual the dogs went to the gate and started barking. They love kids, they just like barking (all while wagging their tail) when they see people in the street. So there are those two kids and their mom, and they stopped to look at the dogs. They just stood there a few minutes, dogs still barking (of course), then the kids started walking towards the gate. I mean, wtf? Can't they leave the dogs alone? Needless to say, I ran to the kitchen and called the dogs inside. What if those kids had opened the gate or something? What if my dogs hated kids and started trying to bite them?

Once the neighbors had people work on a tree in their yard, and those people opened MY gate as well. Bottom line, you can't trust anyone when your dogs are in the yard... I think I'm going to get a good lock for that gate... People are just so **** stupid.

Fran -- a lock on your gate can be good for other reasons, too. Like someone wanting to steal your babies. Although, I guess they could always cut it if they really wanted to steal them :(

ETA: And with that point I just thought... a sign on the gate saying "Video Surveillance on Property"... :D

In some places it's against your covenant for your neighborhood to put a lock on this inside of your fence, you can put one on the outside all you want. I'm not sure where all it abides to, but I had to move mine to the outside if I wanted it on my fence, but what good does that do? I waited a little while and put it back on, and they haven't come and said anything and its been over a year. I guess it just depends on your homeowner's associaton (if you live in a neighborhood which it sounds like you do). I just thought I'd warn you before you did anything that you may have nasty HOA people, but then again it may not apply to you.

We have 2 gates. One is a double wide gate big enough to drive my truck through in case we need it. I have a chain and padlock on there (because we have a pool, it's part of the town code). The front gate is one that has an auto shut thing on it so if you open it it swings closed behind you.

I'd put a lock on the gate if you are concerned. It's not that much hassle, you just need to keep a key handy.
