At what age do males start to lift their leg to pee? I am surprised my dog hasn't picked up on that yet, well he is never around other males except the pass by on walks. He pees all over his front leg all the time.

Zubin was 2 before he did. Hottie was about 4. ( I think some of that was his physical restrictions..) Most of my shepherds it was about 6 months old to 8 months old..

Zeus started it when he was only 6-8 months old. It took Voodoo until he was 3.

Had an 8 week old Beagle that did it regularly. He is a proven stud dog now...lol. He started being manly early...haha!

I consider it somewhat a learned thing and a dominant thing...we had a very submissive altered boy who didn't do it til he started watching dogs at the park do it. He never lifted very high tho! Wouldn't want to get above his station LOL.

LOL Bender is such a girly dog. He hides behind me when he is scared, believe me he is a chicken. Sophie our girl is brave and not afraid of much of anything. With Bender he can have a freaked out look on his face even if your just humming LOL. Thats just Bender. When they play fight Sophie always puts bender in his place if say they are arguing over a toy. Think of a brother sister relationship and you got their relationship.

Its so very funny. Bender is a total mamas boy! His bark is still high pitch but he does have a new bark he does by accident when he gets frustrated or excited. He doesn't know or try to bark like that on purpose. Its a deep howl bark and very cute! His growl is changing too. He is about 6-7 mths. old and just lost his last tooth last week. So he is slow to maturing.

Sawyer squats most of the time, unless he's at the park or showing off for other dogs. Then he lifts. It took him until he was almost 2 1/2.

Thunder was 3 years old before he started to lift his leg, and he rarely does it now. Scooter was just over a year when he started but again, he rarely does it. Sammy was 6-ish months old, and no clue about Marley. Buddy hasn't started yet but he's only 4 months old.

Exactly what Marley does, and he's 3 yrs. old. He only ever lifts on walks away from the house. In the backyard he only ever squats.

Some just don't. My last dog did it all the time after about 4 months or so and he was neutered at 4 months. Ash was neutered at 14 weeks, and he has lifted his leg once in his life. He is now 10 months old

Yep, some dogs never do. It's at least a partially learned behavior. My first dog never did it, the bf's APBT is five and he never has either. Slade never has - he's just shy of 6 months.

I've got a male Shepherd that's 5 that rarely lifts his leg, usually he just stops, stands and pee's. My 9 year old female lifts her leg more than he does. I laugh cause people always tease me that he won't lift his leg, when in reality they know he can love them or eat them, it's their choice.

My adult male is a curb pee'r. He only lifts his leg on trees or poles and he is 7.

My young male who is a little over a year started lifting his leg at around 8 weeks.

Ivan started lifting at 3 months on a regular basis. I agree with Houndedbyhounds, it is a learned behavior AND a dominate thing. Peewee didn't start lifting until he was about a year old and that was after he had seen my SIL dog do it. Ivan on the other hand, started very early. Even his breeder was shocked that at 3 months he was lifting.

He would attempt to lift his leg at 16 weeks (usually his clumsy behind would fall over, lol), but now at 9 months months has been lifting the leg regularly for about 2 months.

Radar only does it at home. He's got such short little legs, but he yanks that thing up so high he's fallen over at times! Darling, but not the brightest creature by any means. Out in public, he usually squats. He's pretty submissive.
