I need some help with my 5 month English Cocker Spaniel's coat.

He has a fine cottony coat that is very noticeable on both sides of his body. His coat is really not looking the way it should. It is more cottony than silky.

We brush him every day and it is looking better, but nowhere near we want it to be.

I was reading something about hand stripping the coat. I have never done this. Anybody know if this might be required? If so, any tips on how I can do this?

Thanks.

hi kama,
i m not good at grooming but i do hand stripping my cocker coat. you are encourage to start this young so that they used to it. and u hv to strip according to the hair grow direction, they won feel pain as those are dead hair.. this might help the growing of new hair and remove dead hair..
my cocker during 5 mths old he still not much hair.. hahaha:D

Hi Kama
don't worried too much about your cockers coat at present, as he is only five months old he will still have a vase amount of puppy hair. i would advise to keep brushing him as you are doing (this helps him get used to being brushed and messed about with one you start grooming him). if you are thinking of getting him clipped don't do it until he is at less 10 months old (unless he has a VERY heavy coat). hand stripping is good but get it done by a groomer, as if you don't know what you are doing it can be painful for the dog. i don't disagree with the post above. hand stripping is not painful if done correctly!!! it's not really something you can teach yourself.
