I used to be in this club in high school. It was a Greyheart Youth Group we helped raise money to rescue greyhounds and go to meet-and-greets and such. they would bring some of the adoptable greyhounds to the club meetings, it was a really great experience.
I always thought Greyhounds were beautiful dogs but when I got to meet these poor dogs that just came off the tracks and the horrible conditions they were in and they were still sweet as could be. I fell in love. I've always wanetd to adopt a greyhound from the Greyheart Rescue. I know I could always ask the people from the Greyheart Rescue about the Greyhounds but a lot of them are pretty biased because well they own Greyhounds and they wanna give them a good home and adopt the dogs out.
I know I could give one a good home. I have a decent sized back yard, a nice house, two dogs that live here that welcome any dogs that come in, I would of course get the dog a dog park pass, I have plenty of time to spend with the dog, etc.
I would like opinions from people that have personal experience with Greyhounds not just information because I know a lot about them I just dont have experince owning one.
Thanks in advance!!

I have 2 greyhounds :) and have always had greyhounds or their crosses (Lurchers).

They really are sweet docile dogs, very laid back, so much so they are pretty much horizontal! They do love to sleep, even youngsters who have never raced seem to love their sleep. Mine love children, and are so gentle and never pushy. They both get on well with my cats, although will chase any others that come into the garden, they also completely ignore all my small animals. They love every single dog they meet.

They only really need two 20 minute walks a day, but will happily take more or less. They aren't the kind of dogs that will bounce off the walls if you can't walk them, they just sleep a bit more! Mine get 2 45minute walks a day, and occasionally longer ones on my day off. They do love to run, so if you can find a place where they can run it would be ideal. Also, they can be accident prone, and have very thin skin, and they easily cut themselves. Todd is a big wimp, and when he hurts himself he wants EVERYONE to know about it, whereas Maddy keeps pain to herself, and rarely shows it. I can let both of my dogs off lead in unenclosed areas, but this is quite rare and does require some hard training.

They also like coats in the winter as their fur isn't so thick, just to keep them warm :) They are also a healthy breed, mine very rarely go to the vet, and they are quite a low cost breed too!

I'm not sure what else you want to know :D I think its great you are thinking of adopting one, as there really is SO many of them, and so many mistreated. Maddy was about to be shot before she was found.

I have one and hes a senile old bat and drives me nuts LOL. He did not get the memo that they are suppossed to be quiet. He makes more noise then out beagle o_O He likes to steal food as a olympic event even though he knows hes not suppossed to. He is reffered to Dead Dog here for a reason, all his pictures make him look dead. you get random strangers telling you to feed your dog more because they dont look like a lab. Mine eats 6 cups a day of Kirklands just to keep him at a lowend weight. If you can handle those things when they get older (not all of them are like this when they get older but sci is not alone. I personally know of at least 3 that were this way when they got older.) then go for it.

No one told us this before we got into it and I wish they had.

You can also foster first to see if they are a good fit.

I know! She wouldn't chase rabbits, so no good as a race dog. So he kept her locked in a shed, with very little food and was telling his neighbour he was going to shoot 'it'. The neighbour reported him, thank god! He had seen him beat Maddy before so knew he was no good.

The rescue doesn't think she had ever met another person in her life other than him, and she was so skinny too! She's had a lot of issues since I got her, but she's wonderful now.

i find most people don't understand they are supposed to be skinny. i've run into recuers that had them morbidly obese because of their ignorance. track dogs are often poorly socialized and so seem maltreated even if they aren't. understand a beaten of under fed dog will not win nearly as much money as a well kept dog so abuse is a lot less common than most rescues would have you think.
all in all greys are on average very good pets & house dogs.
