My girls have eaten greenies....they like them alright....but they like raw marrow bones better, and they seem much safer with them, too. Greenies are so darn expensive, too. Like two dollars a bone . The marrow bones last longer, clean their teeth better and the girlies like them better too :).

oh geez :\ oakley just ate his last greenie...i was trying to see how big of pieces he was eating...right at the end when i saw this thread...he was taking off pieces that were less than 1/2 an inch i think, and then chewing it in his mouth for awhile before taking another piece...hopefully there wont be problems.

he has eaten at least 40 though...so, i guess maybe he is a good chewer...

i am def not gonna be too eager to buy these anymore...and to think...they came so highly reccommended by Petco

Oh dear I better stop giving them to my mutt immediately I hope nothing is wrong with her already. I will let my grandma know to stop giving them to her babies too (toy poodles). That is a shame they loved them so much!!

That's one of the problems...they do "love" them. The fact is that gluten is physically addicting. That is one of the reasons why wheat makes up 30% plus of the calories of the Standard American Diet (SAD), with another 40% being from milk products. From gluten, we derive gliadomorphins, a morphine like substance that comes from the main protein in gluten called gliadin. The counterpart in dairy is the casomorphin that we derive from the main protein in cow milk, casein.

Both of these substances...gliadomorphins and casomorphins... are very addictive. They are the reson we have such cravings for wheat-based foods and CHEESE. When I tell people that they need to start cutting back on these things, many of them say "I could do without the wheat stuff, but I could never give up my cheese." Yep.

Dogs and cats manifest food addictions very clearly. These are the cats that are constantly meowing for food (totally unnatural for an occasional feeder like a cat) and the dogs that are always begging, both of which usually become very overweight unless someone is watching them very closely. Then, they develop serious allergies, ear problems or GI problems... or worse.

So, the dogs DO LOOOOOVE Greenies (unless they listen to their intestinal tract and stop eating them on their own. Those are the wise ones). The ones that love them WILL become ill from them at some point most likely. With these things (like gluten), it is a matter of WHEN they us and them, not IF.

For some interetsing reading, put "casomorphins, gliadomorphins" in your search. Look at their vital involvement in autism. But, they are also responsible for post-meal drowsiness and resulting caffeine addiction. Did you know that more people die from falling asleep at the wheel than from alcohol-related accidents??? Wow! And most of you have never even heard of casomorphins and gliadomorphins, have you? Hmmm...

Hope this helps,
John

I used to give greenies as a treat quite often; i'd buy them and friends gave them to my dog as presents. I stopped when a vet told me stories about dogs choking or swallowing chunks. Luckily, my dog actually chewed each piece before swallowing. But, I figured better safe than sorry.

I give both dogs Greenies occasionally, since they are so darn expensive. BUT, they only get them when I am home and can keep an eye on them and I know that they both actually chew the bits they pull off. They also get the Jumbo size so they have to carefully chew.

Mordy, good point on the obstructions. A friend of mine at work is very worried about this dog they want to get; it's full-brother to the one they have now. Anyway, this dog ate a sock the other day and even though it's been treated, there's a chance it could still die. So the moral here is, watch what your pets get ahold of!
