8 Months to 1 year old? :rofl1: :rofl1: If you're only getting hamsters to live that long, I wouldn't say they were in good care since that isn't old at all!

Anyway, it's pretty normal for hamsters to be bought at places like petsmart or petco that have been badly bred and can have shortened lifespans because of it. As I mentioned, many of my hamsters and hamsters I know of have lived MUCH longer than that. I was just letting her know that if she passed at an early age, it isn't neccesarily anything to do with care, it can be pretty average for hamsters to die much earlier than their "listed life expectancy". And I'm not even going to comment on your other part of the post because it's obvious that Fran is a great owner who takes awesome care of Granger.
