Well my parents brought home a carin puppy today. They've been talking about getting another dog for a while since we lost our westie, Bailey in June. So Gunner (he's my dog) has a sister now. How do we introduce them. I'm concerned since Gunner is getting big and she is so small. He did play sorta nicely with the shih tzu puppy at training the other day. He tugged on hair and ate her face but I guess not too hard and he was laying down playing with her. How long should we wait before we let them see each other? She's 7 weeks old and doesn't have a name yet-my youngest sister doesn't even know we have her yet, she going under the tree tonight! I'll work on getting some pics too since I know those are required! :)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!!!

Thats good to hear, new dogs are always fun, im sure both dogs will come together it only takes time. Pretty soon you will have to stop them from having to much fun, my brothers friend has like a 20 pound dog and my husky lets him crawl all over him and bitem and he will just sit there and watch. Anyways get those pics up!!

I'd suggest sitting down on the sofa (if Gunner's allowed on the sofa) holding the new pup and let Gunner sit next to you so he can see the pup and do the obligatory sniffing. Having the pup on your lap signals Gunner that the pup is part of the family and provides the pup with a sense of security so that it's not automatically afraid of the much bigger dog.

If you don't allow Gunner on the sofa, just sit on the floor with him.

Keep supervising, since Gunner is so much larger and this is a fragile little puppy right now. It's a Terrier, so it won't be fragile for long! Terriers aren't really small dogs; they're large dogs in a compact package. They should have a HUGE time playing together as the pup gets older.

Yes, you're right about the pictures being obligatory! Hurry up!

Well it seems Gunner is jealous of the puppy. We sat down with them and let them sniff and lick and he seemed a little better but he wanted ot play. It didn't help that my sister (she's 14) kept carrying the puppy into my room in front of Gunner in his crate. Anyways we did get some pics but someone forgot to put the card in the canera and don't know how to get them off the internal memory so I'll try to figure it out or I guess we can just take some more. You should have seen my sister; she has been asking for a dog for a long time and she kept saying my parents were going to get her one for Christmas. Especially when they asked her if a westie is okay cause they went to look at some. Turns out they got a carin from the breeder we got our westie from before. She didn't see them bring it in to the basement and totally thought she wasn't getting one, she was pouting cause she didn't get the dog. We put the puppy in a bag and gave it to her last. When we told her that's her last present she got really mad; of course until she looked inside. Now she's carrying it around in a bag she got as a gift from someone else. It's too cute and she's going to be so spoiled. The puppy doesn't quite have a name yet= still debating but I'll let everyone know and hopefully get some pics up soon.

It took Bimmer a couple of weeks to fully accept Shiva and stop just trying to stay out of her reach. It didn't take as long for him to welcome Kharma - about a week or so. It will take some time and some patience.

I really wouldn't advise having Gunner locked up when the puppy's out playing, though. That's a good way to cause some real jealousy problems. You'll want to keep reassuring Gunner that he's the top dog so he won't feel the need to demonstrate it.

What names are you debating?

So should Gunner be out all times the puppy is out? Right now his crate is in my room and the puppy's crate is in my sister's room and we let the new pup out when Gunner is outside or in his crate. I close my door when he's in the crate and I try to tell them not to squeek her toys because Gunner was awake in his crate yesterday morning and then heaard squeeking so he was looking all over. They met again this morning; I am trying to let them out together during some of Gunner's calmer moments. I put Gunner on his leash and made him lay in my lap and the new puppy came up and they sniffed. New puppy started to bite/play and Gunner wanted to play. Then my parents took the new puppy away. I know Gunner won't hurt her and he was pretty gentle with the licking and sniffing but my mom and sister keep saying he's going to hurt her. She's really spunky so I think Gunner would have great fun with her. No one else in the house really likes Gunner, they always say how bad he is; my dad understands he's still learning and I think he kind of likes him. Gunner is improving, just slowly, but the new puppy started biting feet and clothes so maybe they will all realize Gunner is just a puppy and not so bad; he's just bigger so it hurts more. I guess everyone is just used to having a smaller dog. Gunner is doing well in his training class, hopefully he will pass the test tomorrow to be able to go to the next training class but we need to work on wait and leave it. As active as he is, he does an impressive down stay (yesterday he stayed for a little over a minute with 5 treats and could have gone longer but I ran out of treats). :D We also have to work on not jumping, he can almost clear the couch!

Anyway the name changes every time my sister calls the puppy. I thought they had narrowed it down but apparently not. One that most everyone seems to agree on is Kirby. Before we got the puppy, my sister kept saying she was going to name it walt, wally, or mel (or milton) even though it would be a girl. And she "doesn't believe in the color pink" so collar and leash are green. Everyone is like that's just not right everyone will think it's a boy! Have no fear though the collar has rinstones on it and the puppy will not be named Walt. :p

It doesn't sound like there's any problem with Gunner accepting the new pup. It sounds like he's pleased with the new addition, so there's really no reason to keep them separated when you're there to supervise, since the new one is so tiny.

Poor Gunner, it sounds like he's going to be the odd-dog-out with the rest of your family. Just be sure he knows he's always the top dog with you and he won't care so much about what everyone else thinks. Your Dad probably does like him. Most Dads do like the bigger dogs. ;)

Maybe the new pup will end up being 'Mel for short - maybe for Esmerelda, since your sister likes green and it sounds kind of like emerald. :D

Sometimes it's just a matter of finding the dog's name. It took me forever to find out what Bimmer's name should be. It finally hit me, he's shiny and black; very, very fast; turns like nothing else; handles like a dream, is extremely dependable; is mainly German (definitely not domestic), with an unusual 'edge' to him - and he came home in the 750il. Trust me, there will be no other dogs in that car unless it's an emergency and nothing else is available! So Bimmer he is!

And he was very, very well mannered on the 2 hour drive home. He just curled up in the front passenger seat and stretched one paw out to touch my leg the whole way home.

Charley named Shiva before we even got her, and I must confess I had Kharma's name picked out as soon as I knew there was a chance I'd be able to get another puppy from Buffy's lines. Both dogs have definitely lived up to their names. Sometimes that's better than others . . . :D

Thanks Renee, you are always so helpful. I'll bring up esmerelda. Yes my dad grew up with 7 collies as outside dogs (every one of them was named Christy or Chrisie I forget which one). My mom's family went through many dogs; they left as soon as they ate the hose, a shirt off the clothesline, or jumped through the glass door. They ended up with a carin though.

To assure Gunner he is top dog, I just make sure I pet him first, feed him first, and give him treats first right? And of course tell him how good he is and how much I love him. :D

You know my husband LOVES BMW's he is always on the Bimmer forum. If he knew why you named your dog that he would be so jealous that you had a dog named Bimmer. Guess I will have to tell him he won't be able to copy you otherwise how would we ever know who we were talking about? ;)

Maybe you can come up with some other BMW related names? I would prefer just to name mine Louis (Vuitton ;) )

Hmmm . . . I'll have to think on that! But you really should let your husband get you a Bimmer. They're wonderful cars. Dependable, fun to drive, and the parts are much less expensive than Japanese cars' - and don't have to be worked on nearly as often!

I tried to talk him into naming Buffy Porsche (pronounced correctly it sounds like Portia - in Shakespeare) to go with Bimmer, but he'd planned on naming a fawn Fila Buffy since he made up his mind he wanted Filas. So Buffy she was - and she certainly lived up to it in her too-short life!
