Got a new cat recently

So my friend's cat had a few kittens and they lent one to us... We were allowed to keep him for a few days (they provided us with the food, litter box, etc.) to see how we liked it. Those few days passed and we didn't bother giving him back and they didn't bother getting him, Charlie was getting used to him, and we were growing quite fond of him, so... We decided to keep him. =P I've been doing lots of reading and we're taking him to the vet today... And hopefully I can get my mom to go shopping for some more stuff we might need.

I feel bad about doing this stuff a bit late, but it all happened sorta unexpectedly. =/ We weren't even sure we were going to keep him for a while. We've kept him for two to three weeks now.

Here's Peanut (the name my friend gave him) and he's 3~4 months old. (The vet knows the mom so we'll be able to find out for sure.)

At first Charlie was completely terrified of Peanut, but now Peanut plays with his tail and he just sits there looking annoyed.

I have one question though (for now). Is there a way to keep Peanut from eating Charlie's food and Charlie from eating Peanut's food without putting them in separate rooms?

I'm not sure... I don't know any of the cat breeds, actually. I do know that he is a mix, though.

That's a beautiful cat and I would bet some money there's Bengal in the history. That spotted belly is a hint and a half. On the other paw, it just might be one really good looking domestic shorthair. I am really glad your dog and the cat like each other. My dog adores her cats and they are a riot to watch together. Sometimes it can get very heartwarming as well.

The best way to keep the dog from the cat's food is to put it where the dog can't ever get it. Like Up High maybe. If the cat knows where it is, the cat will go there, even if it's in an odd place, so long as there is a means to get there. The thing is, dogs shouldn't eat cat food. Cat food is far far higher in protein than most dog foods. Dogs are carnivores but cats are obligate carnivores, also known as True Carnivores*, which means they can subsist on a diet of only meat and require far more protein. So overall, that cat food is not good at all for your dog. If the cat eats your dog's food, I am kind of surprised. Most cats despise dog food for some reason. In any event I would worry more that the dog is eating the cat's food.

Here is how I keep Tosca from the cat food: I have the food behind a small cat door. Tosca can't do much more than stick her face in it. I do the same with the litter box. It is in an old broom closet with a trap door. If you haven't found out already (and you will!) dogs have a penchant for eating cat poop out of the litter box. Not a fun thing to watch. The aftermath is even less fun. lol.

What a beauty! At least you don't have to change the name lol, when we found out our Lily had more than was expected we had to change him to Willie which I don't particularly like but he had already caught onto the name.

For keeping the dog away from the cats food I just feed them at the same time in different rooms and the cats eat up high. I always worried about the cats eating the dog food because they loved it and Max was not exactly thrilled about them eating his food, luckily he only growled. So they got locked away until he finished and were released when we let him out to potty at which time they would lick the water mixed with kibble flavor off the bottom.

She is VERY cute, I think Bengal too with that spotted tummy.

If I were you I would make sure to start handling her now for clipping claws. Mine all except it quite well but I went to my cousin's house and her cat got quite angry with me, growling and hissing, when I tried to clip her claws. so starting early is important.
