I am getting a Dobie pup and I have to feed him a premium large breed formula for his gaurantee for the rest of his life. What is a good premium dog food. The breeder uses Nutro but someone else I talked to said the nutro wasnt a real premium dog food. That I should use Wellness or something else but I cant remember what it was called.I have to keep every receipt of where I buy dog food so I need to know what kind to buy.Any suggestions.Cost isnt really a factor, but I do want the best for my new pup or as close as I can get.

Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold are the best. You will find them in independent food stores, not in big chains. The cost is more per bag (about $35 for canidae, $40 for innova), but you feed less of it, so overall it's not even more expensive than nutro (make sure to check the recommended doses). Solid Gold isn't available in all states though.

I forgot to add, for large breed puppies it's best to just use their all lifestages formula, it will let them grow more slowly and it will be better for their bones (innova's adult dry is all lifestages, but they also do large breed puppy food, I don't think there is much difference though - I'm not sure solid gold has some all lifestages formula though).

My friend has had her Shepherd on Canidae since a pup and she turned out great...she is acutally in the picture with my Newf's, Dobe and Rottie. The breeder of her Shepherd feeds only Nutro, but the breeder is always remarking on how well Abby turned out...she doesnt believe it has anything to do with the food;)

Like myself my friend also rotates all her dogs foods every 3 months or so. We both rotate between Nature's Variety (which I love), Canidae, Holistic Blend, Go Natural...and sometimes Natura for some of my dogs.

I try to give my dogs a raw meal every night, so Kibble mixed with the same canned, or sardines, canned wild salmon etc...with their supplements. Then at supper time raw burger (lamb, turkey, beef) with chunks of raw meat and a blended variety of veggies/fruit with yogurt, ground flax seed, hemp seed oil and a few other things I throw in...I buy veggies and meat on a Saturday night when they are marked down:)

what size bags are they? I am currently feeding my puppy Iams, as well as my adult dog. Oreo likes the smaller size kernnels and I have always fed something that has chicken as the first ingrident.

You can find Canidae in 5 pound and 33 or 35 pound bags. They are small bites and probably chicken. It's been a while since I've looked at the ingredient lists.

Innova is 5 or 33 pound bags...smallish triangle shaped.

actually, the regular canidae comes in 5 lb., 20 lb. and 40 lb. bags, the chicken and rice only formula in 6.6 lb, 16.5 lb and 33 lbs. i don't have the other ones on hand right now, but they are usually available on the manufacturer's websites.

canidae kibbles are a little larger than innova's, and innova also has a small bites formula separately. if you add water, it shouldn't matter anyway. :)

Actually canidae all lifestages kibbles are smaller than innova adult kibbles. I just switched and it's the first thing I noticed... but that's the 'regular' canidae, I haven't seen the chicken and rice formula around here.

i guess they changed the kibble size then. :) it's been a long time since i've fed commercial food and when i still did, the canidae kibbles were bigger.

canidae is pretty small sized kibble. It's smaller than nutro natural choice. Foxy was on iams and the canidae and the Iams were the same size kibble. Canidae the regular formula is a mix of chicken, lamb, herring (or just fish but I think it's herring) meal. They do have a chicken meal and rice formula but I haven't seen it in my store that I go to yet :(. My lab is extremely finnicky though and lamb is on the top of her DO NOT EAT list but she seems to do ok on the regular formula of Canidae, which has the lamb meal, we have had no problems with her getting sick or any problems with her stool.
