Do you mind shedding? Labs tend to shed A LOT. Spring is here and my girl is shedding like crazy.
Do you want a good watchdog? Some Labs are good watchdogs, but many aren't. May would invite a burglar in for a cup of tea and a cookie.
How much exercise will you be able to provide the dog with? Labs need A LOT of exercise.
How easy to train do you want the dog to be? Most labs are very easily trained, they are very intelligent.

Goldens and Labs are two very sweethearted breeds. Most of them wouldn't hurt a fly...however, I have seen goldens and labs that guard their yards and homes, and I have no doubt my girl would protect me if she had to, but generally she doesn't even bark or growl.

Well, a watch dog and a guard dog are two different things. A watch dog will bark when somebody is at the door, but that is genrally it. Rose (my dog) is a watch dog. She barks and is wary, but that is it. She wouldn't defend at all.
A guard dog is a dog that will bark and then, if needed, back that bark up with a bite. Blackie (my other dog) is a guard dog. He barks, and if somebody was ever trying to harm one of us or break into the house, he'd protect.
IMO, I think of Labs as more protective than a Golden. But that is mainly because of Blackie, and he doesn't act like a Lab. He acts like a Rottie.

Goldens, IMO, are more "I love everybody!" than a Lab is. But then, that is because of my experiences with Blackie.

Here is another site with dog info on it: www.yourpurebredpuppy.com It has some indeapth info. Goldens have a higher matenince coat because it is longer. Also, Labs shed bunchs of short hair everywhere and Goldens shed bunches of long hair everywhere. lol

Having owned both at the same time, I'm passing this on to ElinHunter ....I've only owned Goldens (since 1949 ) but have had 3 lab granddogs visiting Grammy. To me, Goldens are more layed back .

I've had many goldens and labs! They're both great breeds, but they definitely do have different personalities. Check this out:

Labs vs. Goldens

Goldens: NEED attention.
Labs: WANT attention.

Goldens: MUST be touching you at all times.
Labs: WANT to touch you at all times.

Goldens: They must be Catholics – they understand the need to confess their guilt.
Labs: They must be Protestant – What guilt?

Goldens: If they had a job, they’d be a social worker.
Labs: If they had a job, they’d be a standup comedian.

Goldens: If they could speak, they’d constantly say “I love you.” And if you come home and find a lamp is broken, they’d say “Broken lamp? I must have done it. I know I was outside the whole time, but I must have done it. Oh nooo… someone’s unhappy.”
Labs: If they could speak, they’d constantly say “Love me.” And if you come home and find a lamp is broken, they’d say “Broken lamp? I did it. I was having tons of fun. Want to see me break the other one?”

Goldens: Hang on you.
Labs: Body slam you.

Goldens: Long hair in your food, on your clothes, on your couch.
Labs: Shorter hair in your food, on your clothes, on your couch.

Goldens: Brush daily.
Labs: Wash and wear!

p.s. If you get a lab, make sure you're ready for TONS OF ENERGY 24/7!!

lol Eli, nice comparison! My parents had a Lab/Shepherd mix, named Sabre, after I was married and moved out that would literally just come up to you and bump you in the hip. If you didn't have a good footing, you were on the ground. They just need to tap you to let you know they were there. Although they're tap was a slam! Then I'd look down and see his eyes wide and tongue hanging out and say "I know your there" and he'd be so happy that I was paying attention.

LOL, those are really funny. They don't fit my girl though. I do have to admit that Labs to tend to be in the way a lot (and they like it that way). May will sit there and look at me like, "You want me to move? Then move me."

Another one:

A GOLDEN would drive a Toyota Forerunner Eddie Bauer edition, politely waive the driver over trying to change lanes, and have a pink "Breast Cancer Awareness" ribbon on the vehicle.

A LAB would drive a beat up, rusted pickup truck with a gun rack, flip the bird to all other drivers, and have a bumper sticker that says "If you don't like Hank Jr., you can kiss my @SS!"

Your best bet? Get one of each! They really balance each other out! I've had two for the last 10 years -- until I lost them within a year of each other last January :( That's their pic below... Yogi and Eli.

Could be one or both of two things... labs are "usually" voracious eaters (although my Yogi wasn't) and they could have thyroid problems. Same with goldens... prone to thyroid probs.

Labs are known for their ability to put on weight quickly. May doesn't though...she's at a healthy weight (and in the standard) of 63 lbs.. But yeah, there are a lot of fat labs out there, lol.
