My friend and his family are thinking of getting a Golden Doodle and I was wondering if any of you own one so you can give me a bit of info?

If you plan to adopt or rescue from a shelter/rescue then go for it! If you plan to get from a breeder then please choose an actual breed to get, not a mix. Most breeders of mixed breeds are irresponsible, we do not need more breeds (with no purpose except to be pets, there are already a surplus of pets) in the world so there is no need to be breeding them. Plus these breeders are not even trying to create a new breed. They have no standard they are working towards and they are not breeding goldendoodles to goldendoodles (which does not make a goldendoodle, it makes some poodles and some golden retrievers) so they can not be making a breed.

There are many in shelters though, see look:

and then there are about a bazillion poodles and a bazillion goldens and a bazillion golden/lab crosses (which look the same as goldendoodles to me).

I suggest doing a search also.

Mostly, good luck finding a good breeder of those - most don't test the parents (for hips and eyes), and you could end up with a seriously messed up dog. Also, that they don't shed is a myth, it's just a 50% chance. Same for their temperament, you never know what you're going to get. Why not go for a poodle or golden retriever? At least you will know what you're getting (as long as it's from a good breeder that is).

I agree, just say no. Goldendoodles are nothing more than an F1 cross between a Golden and a Poodle, and there is no guarantee that the puppies will have the best characteristics of both parents, or that they will have "hypoallergenic" haircoats. Golden Retriever and Poodle breeders that are worth their salt are not in the habit of selling good breeding stock to Doodle breeders, so your friends may be at higher risk of getting a puppy with hip dysplasia or some other genetic defect common in GR's or Poodles. Additionally, Doodle breeders charge exorbitant prices - for the same money, your friends could get a quality purebred puppy, or even a dog from rescue for way less. If they have their hearts set on a puppy, they should check with the parent clubs of several recognized breeds, and get a breeder referral that way, plus contact local trainers for referrals - they often know who the better breeders in a local area are. Good luck, and tell your friends to keep doing their homework. :)
