I did a search a while back and came across this site www.roysbassets.com and it made me so mad this guy says that breeding bassets is a hobby not a business but look at the site it is all about money to him my husband said it is nothing but a glorified puppy mill he talks like he really loves his Bassets but how can you love that many dogs at once and take care of them right . I have been watching his site just to see what he was up to and it makes me sick in the past three months I have seen him sell a litter a month and in one month he had two litters and the other thing is they don't even meet breed standards and he is selling them for almost as much I have bred my bassets in the past but never more than one litter a year you can't tell me he knows who is breeding who. And he is bashing AKC on his site he probably got in trouble with them how could you keep your records straight with that many.www.roysbassets.com

he has 6-12 litters a year, and he sounds so proud about it! Not to mention he has ten breeding females. What a disgrace!

I came across "Roy" quite a while ago while researching basset breeders. Needless to say, I ran the other way after skimming through his web site. 10 dams, and 4 sires? And 6-12 litters a year...there is no way this dude is keeping thorough records of anything! The picture of his "breeding pen" showed like 6 bassets left to figure out mating on their own...very irresponsible.

On the other hand, Rebec's is a FABULOUS breeder, if you're interested.

How do you make laws to stop these people without penalizing the responsible hobbyists at the same time?

oh he just does it as a hobby so he says but he doesn't care a bit about his dogs he even has a place on there to give away his retired females what a creep if he loved them like family as he says he couldn't just give them to the first person that came along. any way wookie130 does Rebecs have a web site I would like to check her out in the future we will buy another basset baby.

It is too bad there is nothing we can do about it

So many consumers are not in ouch with what is going on here and just have no idea. So many are concerned with price and don't take a close look at what is really going on. It is a real shame this guy has enough business to keep him going.

okay.
problem number.
1."we have the lowest priced bassets on the internet" - thats souns like someonw that loves his dogs
2."We have from 6 to 12 litters of Basset pups a year'' bleh
3."Add shipping if you are not picking the pup up yourself" - he hips them. doesn't say any limits to where he'll ship them. and he doesn't seem to care about the homes the pups go to but he has whole paragraphs written on how to pay him.

argh. he has "reasons to buy from roy's bassets"
The Lowest Prices
No Limited Registration; Other breeders will sell you a pup with limited registering, which means that the dog is registered but no litters produced by the dog are eligible for registration.
Show Bassets; I don't show my bassets (probably because the dogs bred just arn't well bred enopugh to compete)
No Requirement for Spay or Neuter
No Forms; There are no investigations in to your personal life, or forms to fill out

there is so much wrong with that and i dont think he relises he's doing anything wrong

he is really giving good breeders a bad name talking about breeders that sell with limited registration well as long as I can remember that is what AKC wants us to do . And if you have any kind of morals you would do it anyway. I had a guy chew me out because I wouldn't sell him a basset with full registration I told him if I had to sell with full reg. I would just keep the pup he said well one day you will get hard up and needing to sell a pup and when you do call me I had to laugh when he said that because 90% of my pups have homes before they hit the ground . Later I found out that he was about as good as "ROY" LOL

4. No Requirement for Spay or Neuter; I do not require you to spay or neuter your basset. Some will not sell you a basset unless you sign an agreement to spay or neuter it. You are the one paying for it, shouldn't you get to make that decision, on you're on. I believe, ever American can decide for him self, what he wants, and what's best for his pet and family. That's the reason, I place no restrictions on a pup, you buy from Roy's Bassets. It should be your choice to spay or neuter, not mine, or any other breeder.

5. No Forms; There are no investigations in to your personal life, or forms to fill out, asking personal questions about your life.. You don't fill out a form when you buy a goldfish, from Wal-Mart, or any other pet, goat, duck, rabbit, horse, so why should you be bugged with forms when buying a puppy.

These two really killed me.

wookie130 does Rebecs have a web site I would like to check her out in the future we will buy another basset baby.
Becky Pomeroy is excellent, and is heavily involved in basset showing, and breeding to produce puppies true to standard, conformation, temperment, etc. They are true basset enthusiastics who dedicate themselves to improving the breed...they are not doing this for the almighty dollar. Rebec's has probably one of the most well-known and prestigious show lines in the U.S. at this time.

Here's their site.

"2. No Limited Registration; Other breeders will sell you a pup with limited registering, which means that the dog is registered but no litters produced by the dog are eligible for registration. Which means if you elect to breed your basset at a later date, you cannot register any pups from your bassets. Dogs with Limited Registration may not be entered in breed competition at Dog Shows but may compete in all other AKC events. This is their way of keeping the price up, on yes they will sell you a pup with full registration, if you pay them 200 dollars, more. Do you really want to pay that much more for a check mark on a form?

3. Show Bassets; I don't show my bassets. I don't up root my bassets from their domain and carry them all over the country, just so I can show and keep the price up, or to pay for my food and hotel bills. I do not sell show bassets, only pet quality pups. Also you do not have to wait, three or six months so I can see if, it's going to have show potential. I don't show so they are available for delivery as soon as they are, old enough to leave their Mom. All of my bassets, confirm with AKC standards and The Basset Hound Club of America, Inc. I was inspected by AKC (20 April 1999) & ( 23 Oct 02). Click here to see inspection report/form. I do not believe, in inbreeding, just to get a desired look.

4. No Requirement for Spay or Neuter; I do not require you to spay or neuter your basset. Some will not sell you a basset unless you sign an agreement to spay or neuter it. You are the one paying for it, shouldn't you get to make that decision, on you're on. I believe, ever American can decide for him self, what he wants, and what's best for his pet and family. whaaaat?!?!? >:[ talk about dellusional/ignorant/stupid/reckless breeders.

If you look at new "Customer Comments" page, many of the new owners are breeding even more unhealthy pet Bassets! yayyy.
