I have always preferred preferred females. All four of my animals are girls, as well as all planned future pets. As Fable matures, though, I'm seeing that she might do better with a male as my next dog. She's more forgiving with them.
I really don't have any easily explainable reason I prefer females so strongly.

The stereotypes are funny, because Millie is the most clingy, stickiest velcro dog I've ever known.

I will agree with most here...my boys are goofy, a little less mature, a little less serious. The girls are the opposite. They are goofy too, but 'seriously' goofy. A little sharper, they think first.

The two dogs in my life that I found easiest to train, more geared towards obedience and 'commands' and more interested in me were opposite sexes though. But.. both were/are purebred herding breeds.

I've had mostly males. Of my dogs, the males have been a lot more "fun" to be with, compared to the females, who were kind of serious. Blackie, my Beagle/Lab would occasionally get very moody. One time, for no apparent reason, suddenly bit my Lab, Joe's face. They were sitting on the couch on each side of me, and I had gotten up to get something to drink. Just as I was coming back (I was gone 15 seconds, tops), Joe wasn't even looking at her, she just went at him. Since Joe was almost double her weight, this resulted in Joe immediately retaliating. I had to pull him off her, as he was plenty pissed off. Joe was almost as angry as he was when I used Pine Sol to clean my kitchen floor. That stuff turned him psycho! Blackie didn't play after the age of 2, period, her only joy came from eating birds. Joe was playing almost until he died. My Lab/Dobe/Husky Molly was kind of similar, not playing much after the age of 4 or so, only seeming happy when she was hunting stuff in the back yard. King, her littermate, was playful, with me and some few other dogs he liked, until almost the end.

Girls, hands down. Reasons being (all IME):
  • No balls and no "lipstick"! Yuck
  • Generally smarter and pick things up easier
  • More aloof
  • More protective
  • "Deeper" I'd guess you'd say. All the boys I've had were happy go lucky all the time, and that gets on my nerves
  • Neater pee-ers
  • More velcro-y
  • My girls have always lived longer
  • SO much easier to name them!
  • There is partically nothing cute for boys :p

I think it's more of a breed thing then a gender thing, buddy is very goofy, clingy & needy. Bear is not, I know he loves us, but unless I am playing fetch with him he doesn't want much to do with me physically, he likes to share the same space as me but he doesn't crave physical touch.

The 2 females Yumi & Josefina couldn't be more different. Yumi is horribly clingy & not in a good way, she only wants to cling when one of the other dogs is getting attention. We have been working on that (ignoring her when she tried to push other dogs away by Turning our back to her while petting the other dog)

Josefina is prolly the most independant dog I have, she greets you but doesn't pester you for attention, but is happy to get it.

For some reason... I just can't live with a bitch. :D I guess there's only room for one bitch in my house.

I love other people's girl dogs, but for me, I click so much better with the eager to please, goofy, good natured disposition of boy dogs. And I would never, EVER want to deal with dog periods. Of course, Corgis of all genders are magical, but that's about the only female dog I'd want.

After working in the kennels at school this morning where we have two girls in season and at least three boys with balls... I want to swear off boy dogs forever.

NONE of the boys could focus on doing ANYTHING outside other than chattering, drooling, and making ridiculous fools of themselves. Seriously annoying.

"Oh, hey, Dutch, why don't you pee?"
"MMMMMMM GIRL PEE MMMMM LET ME LICK ALL THE PEE AND DROOL OBSESSIVELY..."

No. Just no.

Girls. My first dog was a boy and I loved him but at times he was a bit hard to handle maybe that was my fault but I've had it easier with my girls ever since.
