I just rescued a 6 year old toy poodle from a horrible breeder. It'd been feed nothing but Pedigre. I would like to know the best way to get her to eat a different food. She is very picky and will sort through the pedigre brand. I have a little Nutro that I've been slowly adding but she just pics through it. She doesn't have many teeth left so I have to mix it with warm water. How about using some good canned food with the dry? I see that the canned doesn't have much protien.

Thanks!

Well I would suggest switching her to a better food such as Innova (naturapet.com), Eagle Pack (eaglepack.com), or Canidae (canidae.com). These are great foods. Your new dog (by the way good job for rescuing) is seeing exactly how much she can get away with from you. What you need to do is just put the bowl down for 10-15 minutes and whatever isn't eaten (even if she eats nothing at all) gets picked up. Try again later on setting the bowl down for 10-15 minutes and whatever she doesn't eat gets picked back up. A healthy dog will not starve themselves. It is ok to add canned, or to mix with a small amount of water (I add water to my dog's kibble). I might even just suggest switching cold turkey to the brand that you want to use that way she can't pick out only the pedigree. I had a husky that we rescued that was really similar and she would not eat for days and then finally she got hungry and decided what we were feeding wasn't too bad.

A Quality Canned food is actually not bad.
I think it could be a good option with a dog with few teeth.

Others will be able to explain better than I..... I do used canned food sometimes to make a gravy, but only a teaspoon or so mixed with water and then poured and stirred into dry food.

I know the protein content cannot be compared to dry food though.. the moisture content is completely different.

There is a company called EVANGERS.

Most of their canned foods are 100% pure meat.

I would attempt to switch to a canned food.

My poodles both eat Canidae chicken and rice formula (one of them has a sensitive stomach).

Many dogs prefer canned food and it is fine to feed only canned.

Good Luck

Switched to Innova and I think Tinkerbell loves it. She's actually picking through it and leaving the old food and...she seems to really like it better dry. Who'd of thunk it!! I'm sooo happy she likes it!

How are the poopers?

A lot of people claim their dogs have stool problems on EVO. I fed it to 4 different dogs and had better stool than ever before. I am interested to hear how your dog does on it?

When we got her, her stools were very hard and dark. She seemed to really have to push 'em out. Now, they are a medium brown, firm but not hard.
