How old does a pup need to be to be fixed? My boy friends mom got a new pup thats 12 weeks old now, hes a beagle/terrier/docson mix or something like that. How old does he need to be before he can be fixed.

They can be fixed at that age or at any age thereafter. Some people like to wait until six months or even a year because they think there's a risk of stunting the dog's growth, but personally I am all for pediatric neuter because young puppies recover so much faster than older dogs (especially neuter. Spaying is more invasive, so there's a longer recovery time no matter what age.)

Some old school vets will still tell you to wait until an animal is 6 months, but many will neuter or spay as long as the animal is 2 pounds. My Pug was done at 14 weeks, and my gray kitten was neutered at 10 weeks.

Early alter doesn't stunt growth it slows the closing of the growth plates and leaves many dogs a bit lanky and awkward. Also, many larger dogs fail to muscle up.

LMAO LIzzy!

I think it's ok at an early age...one of our cats was done at 6 weeks, while the Lab was done at 7-8 months. I think it depends on your vet.

Puppies can be spayed as early as 6-8 weeks. There are many benefits to early spay/neuter. Kudos for putting the welfare of your dog first!
