When I think about it GSDs vary a lot also. Just in one breed you have Working Lines and Show lines. In within those you have West German, East German, Czech etc.... in the working lines and divisions in the Show world with American GSDs being very different than West German show dogs.
There's a pretty big division between show Rotties and working Rotties as well. Most working Rotties are much smaller than people expect- under 100lbs. I know one who is a certified patrol dog for the police and he's 80lbs and looks tiny compared to the 120lb ones you usually see.

That can vary widely. A nicely proportioned 22 inch bitch might be 75 lbs. A 25 inch bitch might be 105 and still be within the standard.

Same with males. A top conditioned 24" male might be 90 lbs. A heavy boned substantial male can be 140 at 27".

There may even be dogs and bitches who would fall outside these extreme parameters and still be within the breed standard. So it is really almost impossible to answer that question.

My current males weigh... Oliver 102 pounds and he is the taller of the two
Carsten 105 and he is a shorty. :) He needs to put on a few more pounds. That will come in time. He is young.

I had a rottweiler for 10 full years... We have a garden too, but since we live in Canada, that didn't really matter since he was inside for at least 7 months in a year.

He was an amazing guard dog, at time he was just a little "too much" but we didn't really mind his agressive behavior :) as we felt really safe.

Once they get to know strangers, they become very loyal pets and friends.

Personally I prefer a rottwiler over german sheppard, but that's just my oppinion.

You should check Dogs & Puppies | Dog Breeds Information & Pictures, Free Classifieds, Dog Names Directory | PetYourDog.com for more info, they have lots of information regarding both breeds.

Good luck!

I've had both a Rottie and a GSD. That Rottie was an amazing, incredible dog who was badly bred and had a horrible past but was still the kindest, most intuitive boy. But I have to say I prefer German Shepherds personally... I like herding breeds! I like how biddable, eager to learn and intense they are. (ok, so I guess Rotties can herd, too) :p

Rotties tend to be DA, in my experience, at least to some extent. Definitely not all of them.

GSDs tend to be much more wary of strangers, and slower to warm up to people.

German Shepherds, IMO, are more energetic and physically demanding. They tend to develop neurotic behaviors if they aren't worked or exercised.

Rotties are wayyy quieter than GSDs... way, way, way.

EDIT: I didn't realize how old this thread was.
