Trayvon was black and he had on a hoodie. I believe it is due to how hoodies cover some of your face, but it is intimidating to people, especially if your black with a hoodie on. Trayvon was out at night with a hoodie on. Zimmerman's call to police stated that Trayvon looked suspicious, had his hands in his pocket, walking and looking around.

Geraldo explains the hoodie issue better than me...

I don't know whether to laugh or cry that we're going to attribute this situation happening over the fact he had a hoodie on.

Just because I don't hear all the racial slurs ever used (& I am glad I don't) doesn't mean I have no life experience.

How can I be making it about race? I am IN a Multi racial relationship!
Do you want a sticker? Nobody cares about your relationship. Surprise of surprises, this thread is not about you.

YOU are the one continually bringing up race. THAT is how you are making it about race. Want it to not be about race? Stop bringing it up. That includes stop saying "GUYS IT'S NOT ABOUT RACE. What if my (insert boyfriends race here) boyfriend was to do this? Then what would happen?" Because that right there... Makes it about race.

For the record, just because you're dating somebody of a different race, does not mean you're not racist.

No, it is due to him being black AND he had a hoodie on. We already know what he was doing at the time so this wasn't due to him being caught breaking into someone's house or spray painting a wall. It was night, he was walking home from the store, talking on the phone, with candy and tea in his pocket.

Well that just pushes it more to the "cry" side then. Black while wearing a hoodie is why. No wonder Geraldo is irrelevant these days.

Aha! There's the "I'm not racist, I have a black friend!" post every good thread even remotely about race must have. You said "You're making it about race!" but then you say "Well what if he was hispanic?". Anyways, you kind of missed the point, carry on.

I believe we CAN bring race into this as a discussion, I don't think it should be taboo. In my personal opinion, I don't believe the actual incident was about race. I believe it leaned more towards stereotyping/what the kid was wearing and how he was acting, at least as far as being viewed as 'suspicious'. The actual court case, charges, and whatnot may be racially slanted. It does happen, no doubt.

Lol so now I am a racist ... whatever.

I think it was more about the kids age then it was about his race, that & the fact that he was acting suspiciously he just could have continued home then told his parents/ guardians once he got there what happened.

But no, he probably thought since he was younger & stronger then Zimmerman that he could "handle it" himself. We are also forgetting that as a member of neighborhood watch, Zimmerman was just doing his "job."

I'm not saying Zimmerman was right, I'm not saying Martian was right. They both handled the situation badly, the cops handled the situation badly also it was just a badly handled situation all around.

BOTH people had opportunities to deescalate the situation. Just a bad situation made worse by bad decisions. But I have to say I'm okay with the jury's decision. There just wasn't sufficient evidence to call it murder or even manslaughter BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT.

I'm going to disagree. The cops looked at the available evidence and made a descent judgement call which has been born out by the jury's decision.

So, in all seriousness, every single one of you saying that Martin was a hoodlum and got what was coming to him... you guys were perfect when you were seventeen? Never snuck out? Never ditched school? Never got suspended, tried smoking pot, pulled a prank that went too far... nothing?
At seventeen I was pretty far from perfect, but I don't think I deserved to die. Whatever y'all did as teenagers probably didn't warrant a spur of the moment death penalty from a racially profiling vigilante as you were walking to a place you knew you'd be safe.
Yes, things went way too far, but there is still a man who took illegal vigilante actions against a seventeen year old boy, perfectly innocent or not, and forcibly took his life. For Zimmerman to walk away without so much as a slap on the wrist is not only disgusting, it's a failure of our justice system. Martin didn't even have a chance to grow up and become whatever it was he'd have been, and that, people, isn't right, good kid or bad kid, he was still, no matter how you look at it, just a kid, and a scared one at that. Both were wrong, but two wrongs don't make a right.

There is a difference btw "not perfect" & doing just plain bad ****. The kid sprayed Graffiti on his school, stole, among other things. Does that means he deserved to die? No, but it makes me think he wasn't an innocent party in all of this anymore then Zimmerman was.

Besides, we aren't the ones who will have to live with the taking of a life for the rest of theirs. But if he had not had a gun, I firmly believe that Martian would have best Zimmerman to death.

I would wonder whether Zimmerman would have felt confident enough to continue following someone if he didn't have a gun. Some very small people can feel very large when they have a weapon.

No this.

There isn't really "I love my caucasian husband" stickers for sillysally. I'm sorry.

No. No one is saying you are racist. Jess is saying just because you have an SO or a friend or a butler of a different race, it doesn't automatically make you not racist. It is still possible. She is not really saying that you, specifically, are racist.

We'll never know, will we? The US has a justice system in place and most citizens are not permitted to play judge, jourer and executioner for a reason. Zimmerman found out first hand why. Frankly, I think he'd probably be safer in jail in solitary... not that child murderers deserve to be safe.

Oh I understand the context now, I actually have more Hispanic / Latino friends then white friends TBH :p. As someone in a border state with a fiancée of a different race (though he is legally here) we have been the target of racism before. He has been called a "wet back" & a "job stealer", we just walk away & laugh at the morons because of how absurd it is.

I just didn't think "oh yeah this was racially motivated" when I first heard about it, maybe because that's not how I think because to me it doesn't matter what color your skin is, if you are acting suspiciously I will keep an eye on you.
