Ok....sorry I forgot to upload photos!

Keep in mind Orson is an average size Dobe within standard size range. He is 27 inches at the shoulders and stays 75-80 lbs though AKC calls the doberman a medium dog!

My stance on Crowley is he is a MEDIUM dog and my husband insists he is a small dog.

I understand what some of you are saying about 'size not being ONLY measurements'....Crowley is 10lbs lighter than Phoebe was, and she was at least 5 inches taller than him but Crowley somehow seems (in my head) bigger than she was  She was very dainty and graceful in her actions and manner, where Crowley...well he's NOT, LOL

His fur is 4 inches long and very wirey and thick in some places so try not to let his hairiness fool you, but notice his front legs....that girth is bone, not fluff. That's why I mentioned IMO he has a thick frame.

Please excuse the horrible photos....all of you who know me know that I am NOT a photographer, LOL Place on top of that the hyper zoomies and well this is what you get!

Tiny dog range = <10 lbs

Small dog range = 10-25

Medium dog range = 25-55

Large dog range = 55-90

Extra large/Giant dog range = 90+

Flexible to somewhat account for height/perceived size differences.

I mean I consider Webby to be a medium-size dog at 22lbs. He just seems bigger.
That said, this is more if you ask me to define those particular labels. In reality, in my head, the catagories are

Too Small
Travel-Sized!
Good Size
Kinda Big
Too Big

As a reference to how they fit my preferences/lifestyle, and they don't necessarily match the above weights/sizes haha. I like dogs in all the categories, but I prefer bringing home dogs in the TS to GS range ;)

Honestly, I can see it both ways. He's the small side of medium, or the large side of small! LOL He looks to be about as small of a dog as I would ever want to own, and since I have no desire to own a "small" dog, maybe that makes him a petite medium!

Either way, he is freaking adorable.

ETA:

Here is a picture of Cynder and Abrams together. Abrams is ~ 25ish", 85ishLBs. Cynder is 16ish", 30lbs. Abrams is a "large dog" and Cynder is a "medium dog". She can walk underneath him when he stands.

Without reading any other responses so I won't have mine "tainted," here were my initial thoughts:

Tiny dog range = <10 lb

Small dog range = 11-24 lb

Medium dog range = 25 - 49 lb

Large dog range = 50 - 84 lb

Extra large/Giant dog range = >85 lb

personally, 25 to me is right on the border between "small" and "medium" and I think my overall impression might be swayed by height/overall physique. I honestly don't doubt that there could be a 30 lb dog that I might classify as "small" and a 23 lb dog that I'd classify as "medium."

Boo, to me is a "medium-large dog" at ~55 lbs. But of course, if I HAD to pick, I'd call her "large."

Yes I mostly think of dogs over around 18-19" as too big. I like travel sized and pocket sized. Really over 40 lbs is pushing it for me...

This is exactly how I think of them as well! Jack and Heidi are solidly in the travel-sized/good-sized range. Missy's hovering around "kinda big".

I always said I wanted to stay in the 20-50lb range, Missy is larger than what I'd prefer. But I grew up with a large dog (90lbs) and she never struck me as "too big". But she was very conscious of her surroundings, whereas Missy is constantly knocking things over and running into things. So I think behavior plays a big part in how "large" a dog seems.

Hmmm?

Tiny dog range = Not allowed to walk on the floor

Small dog range = Below my knee

Medium dog range = To my knee

Large dog range = Above my knee

Extra large/Giant dog range = To my waist or higher

:p

Most of the time I see it like this...

Tiny dog range = less than ~10 lbs

Small dog range = 10-24 lbs

Medium dog range = 25-50 lbs

Large dog range = 51-100 lbs

Extra large/Giant dog range = anything 100+
Those are my cutoffs, too. Ziva is 15.5" and 26lbs and I consider her on the cusp of small/medium. Snipe is 17" and 30lbs and definitely a medium dog. :)

I would call Crowley a medium dog, and Orson a large dog. IDK how the AKC can think a Dobe as a medium dog, lol. That's weird to me. I've always seen them as a large dog.

I mean, Crowley is like, small side of being medium (he's probably smaller than Roxie, and I consider her to be medium-medium. Not large medium, but right in the middle). But not so small that he could be considered small, small.

25# is small to me. I would say:

Tiny: < ~10#
Small: ~11-30#
Medium: ~31-60#
Large: ~61-100#
X-Large > ~100#

50 numerically seems to make sense as a cut off, but then I think... Maisy is right around 50# and I do not at all consider her a large dog. She seems really little to me, actually.

Not that anyone cares, but I made a mistake and said my largest Poodle was just under 5 lbs. No, he's just under 6 lbs. lol. 5 lbs, 15 oz.

Tiny dog range = >10lbs, >10"

Small dog range =10-30, 10-15"

Medium dog range =25-50, 16-23"

Large dog range =40-90, 23-26"

Extra large/Giant dog range =90+, 24+"
This mostly, except for those odd breeds like bassets. Ivan and Phoebe fall into the med category. Ivan is 22 inches and 50 pounds which is on the lighter side for a male dal. Phoebe should top out at about 20-21 inches tall and maybe 40 pounds which is about average for a female dal. Most male dals are between 50 and 60 pounds and 22 to 23 inches tall.
