This morning Freckles woke up seizuring. I don't think i've been so scared in my life, having never experienced a seizure.

After she came out of it she was really dazed and stumbled a bit, once she could get up we rushed her to our vet. They are running testes on her as I type, and are going to send in blood to the labs. I won't hear about those results until tomorrow. I really do not know much of anything right now. They are keeping her for the day incase she has another one, and to run the tests. But she will have to come home tonight as no one will be there through the night.

I have heard of dogs showing no symptoms prior to a seizure, they will seizure out of the blue, but never have one again. This is what I thought at first. But what really worries me is that looking back, she has had a lot of abnormal symptoms that I should have paid more attention too. I wished I would have gotten her into the vet sooner :(. The past few weeks she has been 'off'- i'm not exactly sure how to explain it. She is usually a high energy dog, but the past couple of weeks all she wants to do is sleep and she's lost weight. I had figured it was because of the warmer weather we are having, the other two get sluggish around this time of year and usually will loose a bit of weight- so I kind of shrugged it off. She also went after Chloe a couple times since they're last big fight I posted about, for absolutly no reason. She even went after Malakai....so unlike her. Last night she hid in my room most of the night, she just seemed so tired, she was breathing heavily, and all she wanted was my attention. It just seemed like that 'spark' was gone from her eyes, like she was not quite there.

I am a nervous wreck right now...Please keep my baby in you thoughts and prayers today.

I will let you know as soon as I hear something.

thanks you guys :(

just talked with the vet. The bloodwork the he did came back normal, but her blood sugar is very high considereing she hasn't eaten since yesterday morning. We have to wait a week to get the other results back though...valley fever ect.

They have her on some Phenobarbital and she is sleeping right now. He said she still seems a a little out of it and 'dull.'

How old is Freckles?

Seizures are about the scariest thing in the world, and I totally relate. My Harvey started having them back in February. Like you, I didn't realize there was something going on until he started having grand mal seizures (in the middle of the night of course!). Hindsight is 20/20, eh?

Harv was really dopey and drunk when he started Phenobarb. It took about 3 weeks for the drunkenness to wear off. He still drinks and pees a lot and is STARVING all the time.

Phenobarb can be a little bit of a scary drug because it does have the potential to be hard on the liver, so regular monitoring is important. But it's usually pretty effective at stopping the seizures, and that's the big thing.

this website has a ton of good info: http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/site_map.htm

and if you're interested in a mailing list, the one here: http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/ is fantastic.

Good luck and best wishes to your pup!

Arrow Animal Hospital...it's on 51st ave and Thunderbird right next to Ace hardware.
We used to take ours there, too, but now we take them to Valley West Animal Hospital because my cousin is a tech there. Arrow is really close to me though. I'm on 55th and Cactus.

Get a thyroid test done on her. If she has attacked one of her housemates recently it could be a symptom of thyroid problems. My thyroid dog never had weight gain/hair loss or any other 'normal' symptoms of thyriod, but she got VERY grumpy, and a bit lazy before we got her tested.

Also, just wondering, but why did your vet put her on phenobarbitol after just one seizure? To me, that is more of a last resort for dogs who seizure often, or have long, difficult, dangerous seizures.

Freckles is home. Still sleepy and out of it, she hardly recognized me when I picked her up. I guess it's just a waiting game now...I have a feeling the next couple of weeks are going to go by so slow. Thanks for the replys everyone.

Sorry to hear this :(

I have a friend who has a collie who regularly has seizures due to epilepsy. She is medicated.

It's not nice, but it can be controlled, and she leads a perfectly happy life.

Hope it's nothing serious :)

My Dalmatian was epileptic and was given phenobarbital too...she got her first seizer at about a year old or so if I remember correctly and she was on phenobarb. till her last day. It certainly changed her character though...completely different dog after having to take that every day. REALLY slowed her down.

I hope everything stays well with your dog, it's a scary thing to experience, believe me. Best wishes and prayers for you both.
