i live on 120 acres of unfenced property, about a week ago during a rain storm this dog showed up at night, i couldn't see him that well until the following morning. what i found was an imaciated, tick covered dog. I took him to the vet for his shots and a check up. He's approximately 6 months old, he has a very sweet temperment, gets along with our jack russell and all 9 cats. I'm wondering if its alright to leave him on a long leash outside when I can't watch him closely and I always walk him on a leash. He is responding to his new name and listens most of the time. Right now since it's raining outside he is in my room with me. any input and feed back on this dog would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn''t leave a pup that young on a line especially without proper shelter. Winter is coming and Collies aren''t built to tolerate the long cold North American winters like other breeds. Especially not a collie puppy. If he doesn''t have a properly insulated doghouse or a cozy barn to retreat to I would keep him in the house.

Is there any chance you can find the owners? Maybe someone put an add in the paper for a lost dog, or flyers..etc.

If there's no chance of locating the owners are you planning on keeping him? If so, he's a lucky dog to have been taken in and cared for.

Did the vet say he looked healthy despite his poor nutrition?

If he's been used to roaming free I'm not so sure putting him on a long leash is going to keep him contained. He may just chew right through the leash.

Is he going to be an indoor dog? I'm not sure on the temperment and behavior of a border collie.. but there are several other chazzers who own them who might be able to help you out.

Goodluck with whatever you decide and thank you for caring enough to give this dog a second chance at a happy life.

Hmm. . .I don't think it's such a good idea to leave any dog outside tied up unsupervised. Is there anyway you can leave him in a room inside so you don't have to worry about him being safe or sheltered? Have you tried calling shelters to see if anyone is looking for their dog? I own a BC mix and I know a bit about BCs. . .if there's any specific breed questions I'd try to answer them. Leaving him outside is debatable upon what weather you have. I'd rather see you put him in a fenced yard if you can't find the owner. From what it sounds like it seems you don't have one. . .anyway could you give us a little bit more info?

I have a lab/border collie mix. They are bundles of energy! :D

I wouldn't put him on a long leash outside, just thinking that Sadie would never go for it. But, then I wouldn't tie any dog out. :) I guess just see how the dog does with it, but I wouldn't leave him unattended until you know how he's going to do. I would definetly give him some type of shelter outside.

By the way, you are awesome for taking this puppy in! My hats off to you....

response to questuions on stray boarder collie

yes he does have a dog house, he's right outside my bedroom door. but at the moment he is sleeping next to me as I type this. I did look in the paper at lost dog ads. He has a chainlink leash so he can't chew through it. my dad is retired and here all day, so he takes him with him and his dog Baily. He gets alot of attention. I'm an emergency room nurse so I have to work. Right now I'm trying to work on indoor training. His name is Waylon.

I'm so glad you will be training him to be indoors. I know people have dogs outside all the time.. but I just could never leave my dog outside. She is never ever left outside unattended.. not even for a minute.

I'm also so glad you have decided to take him in and make him your pet. Waylon is a nice name. We'd love to see pictures.

Oh, and kudos to your choice of profession.. it's very rewarding at times, huh?

Just wondering but, did you try to look for his original owners?

What if they are out there looking for him??

Otherwise, congrads on rescuing a pup :)

Definately keep him indoors for the winter time and pen him in the house when you aren't available to watch him. Its the saftest thing for him. DO NOT leave him outside unattended on long periods of time. SOO many things can happen to them - poisoning, attacked by wild animals, theft, choking, injured limbs etc etc.. the list can go on.

If the owners can't be found, congratulations on the new family member! I wouldn't leave him chained - get or make a large chainlink kennel with a "roof" on it so he can't climb out, and put him in there when he can't be supervised. It'll be much better for him than chaining him.
Also I would advise getting an indoor crate (wire or plastic, not a soft canvas one) to keep him in during the winter, instead of the outdoor kennel. Border Collies can handle some cold, but it's hard for them to spend all day outside in freezing weather.

You have a Jack Russell so I'm sure you're familiar with high energy dogs. This pup will need a great deal of exercise. Don't expect him to "kennel up" nicely if he's full of energy.

Yes he's been checked for a microchip, there are alot of ranches here in this area. the town itself is a pop. of about 30,000. you could tell by the length of his claws and foot pads that he was out there for awhile. So he's getting the best of care. Goes back to the vet on the 13th to be neutered and heartworm test.
