Also can I rant a second? I've had several people ask about the ad on craigslist. Every single one is 'can I see a picture?' Then I ask them to describe their missing dog and I get a response of 'scruffy'. I described the dog as a terrier mix so that's kind of 'duh'. Nothing about color or how big or any of that. Leaves me feeling uneasy to say the least.

How do you tell if these are actually the owners or not if they can't describe their dog or give me a picture?
Ask her name, see if she responds. Ask for proof of vet records, not really to see them, just to see if they can produce them. Ask them specifics. How tall, what colour, where she was lost. Perhaps ask where they got her, if its a breeder or a shelter ask for the name...

I dunno, I would imagine it's not the actual owner if they can't describe the dog... I mean, I could see not having a picture maybe, even though in this day and age it's a little strange that there wouldn't be any pictures. But gosh, if Auggie went missing and I found an ad posting where somebody thought they had him, I'd be sending the biggest description of everything possible. And I would be e-mailing over and over and over until I heard one way or another too...
There've been a couple people I've been able to rule out because I've at least had them ask about a white dog or a black dog.

I feel like I'm having to extract information from these people though. Like asking them 'okay what color is your dog? How big is your dog?'

If it were me and Mia was missing and someone asked for a description of her, I would definitely be saying something at least along the lines of "She's a black, tan, and white papillon about 10-11 inches tall, 7 lbs. She has long hair and large ears with lots of hair on her ears" AT LEAST. Not even going into specific details about Mia's appearance like her big freckle on the right side of her nose.

Also of note, many haven't even mentioned gender. Just 'I lost a scruffy dog'. Weird.

I'd be really surprised if the people emailing you were the actual owners. Like Beanie said, I could describe both my dogs very accurately. Especially if they aren't mentioning gender - well, that's just too easy and it doesn't sound like they're being honest.

Yeah I can't even imagine not mentioning the gender of your dog. I am kind of wondering if some people aren't hoping to find a cute little dog for free by scouring those ads and asking for pics of the lost dogs.

I did rule out one more person.

some craig's list people like to flip animals too--get one for free and turn around to "rehome my dog for a fee" kind of thing. Sucks.
I hope you find her owners--or a decent new home.

Sounds like you haven't gotten any contacts from the real owners. :(

Make them tell you her name, that way you can check it out and see if she responds to it with any reliability since having a new person call her by any name might get her excited enough to run to them. If it's the real owner they'll be grateful you're being so careful.

Aw I just got a contact with what sounds like a really wonderful owner who is devastated because she lost her terrier. Unfortunately it wasn't the same dog. :( I feel so bad. I would really love to tell someone that I do have their dog.

Yeah after they answered "scruffy" I might send them one more email saying "can you be more specific, what is its name, can you list at least three specific things that would help identify the dog" (you could just put that in your craigslist ad) and if they didn't email back with "brown and gray, long hair, female, mid-calf at shoulder, goes by 'Cookie'" (or another reasonable description) just ignore them.

Even a dog owner who barely cares about the dog is going to be able to offer a name, gender and a few basic descriptors.

I would keep her for at least two weeks before advertising her for sale.

I hope you find the owners! Failing that I hope she really is a dump case. It would suck if you found her a new home and then a month later you got a call from a heartbroken owner.

If anyone's seriously interested let me know! We'll be keeping her a while longer to give the owners a chance but I haven't heard anything back in a while. NONE of the people I asked for descriptions ever emailed back. Hmmm... not suspicious at all.

Yeah that's a concern of mine too. I'd hate for that to happen. :( I guess you do what you can though. If we'd left her she'd likely have been hit by a car out there since she was chasing them.

Oh yeah and the updated pics in case you missed them. I think her coat is looking better by quite a bit. I've been brushing her out and conditioning it every day.

As compared to day 1

dies she is such a glorious little dog. Fingers crossed, vibes and prayers that her story ends up a happy one. IT will if it does because of you. She reminds me a bit of Sadie in her scruffiness.

Thanks Smkie! I will do what I can to find her the home she deserves. She definitely deserves a good one.

Now this is all I can find about lost property and trying to find an owner in the state. There is no specific time frame and the shelter never gave me a time frame either (they were not helpful)

The finder of a thing may sell it, if it is a thing which is commonly the subject of sale, when the owner cannot with reasonable diligence be found; or, being found, refuses upon demand to pay the lawful charges of the finder, in the following cases:

1. When the thing is in danger of perishing, or losing the greater part of its value; or,

2. When the lawful charges of the finder amount to two-thirds of its value.
so what is 'reasonable diligence'?

I think that is totally up to you. give her an ear rub for me and tell her she's a lucky dog to fall into such good hands.

I didn't mean to imply that you were doing anything wrong (re-reading what I wrote, I see might have come off that way.). I just worry about stuff like that.

I really don't think anyone could accuse you of anything less then reasonable diligence, but I guess better to call someone?

Give it another week, then get in touch with the lady whose dog recently died. BET she'd jump at the chance to love a little sweetie like this!

Do you think it would be bad to go ahead and get her shots and checked out for HW and all that soon though? It would be nice if we didn't have to keep her separated from the paps 24/7 (Nard obviously will still have to be kept away).

Also, how do you find a good low cost place for shots and s/n? Our vet is pretty expensive.

Oh and Xandra, I didn't think you were accusing. I worry about that too.

Definitely do!

I may have run into a small 'issue'. She may resource guard a bit. I haven't had any problems with food but she tenses up some when you try to grab a toy from her. So far no growling or anything like that but I just figured I'd mention it in case anyone is interested.

ETA: I may take that back. I've taken the toy from her many times and I think she just wanting to keep tugging it.

Definitely needs a leave it command or a drop it command though. She gets very into tug.
