Someone (a person who does not frequent message boards) was saying the other day that forums arent really safe because people can figure out who you are even if you dont provide your last name, address, phone number, etc.

So, is this true? I mean I dont think I have ever given any info that would allow someone to figure out exactly who I am... what do you think... how hard would it be to figure this info out?

Someone who is going to go to all the trouble to hack in and gather that info is going to be able to do so through your own e-mail accounts or pretty much anywhere you are on the net.

There's no guarantee someone who sees you on the sidewalk isn't going to find out who you are and where you live. It's not that difficult.

At some point you have to decide whether or not you're going to let fear circumscribe your actions an unreasonable amount.

I think it'd be hard from a screen name, unless they were truly digging and could hack and get your IP number. From there, I guess if they tried hard enough, they could get information. I'd think it wouldn't be easy.

I try not to give out a ton of info online, as far as message boards. My first name, and my state, and that's about it. I rarely, if ever, post my town, and I never post my address. A couple people I know have my cell phone number. I'm not a paranoid person, just an overly... nervous one, so I'm particular and watchful of the information I give out.

On the other hand, I have friends that go online, and give out all their info publicly, and really don't see a problem with it.

Now... with that said...

Once upon a time, I was on another forum. Between my first name, and me slipping the name of one of the rescues I volunteer with and my vet clinic, someone who is a complete nut job that hated me, got in contact with not only my rescue, but other rescues I'm with, and my vet clinic. They tried prying info out of them on if I really owned the dogs I said I did, were they really speutered, and then threatened to call the SPCA and have me investigated for animal neglect for the amount of animals I owned, and to have me investigated to see if my animals were stolen. Yeah, they needed some serious medication.

They were a complete NUT JOB. I never saw the SPCA, but I was alerted quickly by my rescues and my vet that a whack job was trying to get info out of them. Never found out 100% for a fact who it was, but I have a very, very, very, VERY good idea, and a good amount of proof who it was.

Anyways, I think it'd be nearly impossible to find out who you are without posting any info such as a last name, address, phone number, ect.

I had a wierd guy find me from my old myspace...he was at a friends house and was like "hey check this chick out" his friend recognized me and told him where I worked...He then sent me a few mesgs trying to get to know me...I humored him, but was not interested and kept trying to politely let him know that.....

so he shows up at my work.

I didn't have any personal info on my myspace...just photos that som' chick recognized.

That's cause most of the threatening stuff happened in PM's. She's a nut case, and yeah, you probably know her. But it's all suspicion, without hard proof on the exact person, so I never brought anything to light or said anything publicly. Not enough proof to do so. But really bad things could've happened had this person hounded and lied to the SPCA enough. Glad it's all behind me now, it was a nightmare at the time. With my anxiety, yeah, THAT was fun.

Speaking of MySpace... I have an account, but no friends, that I made like 4 years ago. I can't even remember the screen name, LOL.

But I do have a Facebook account. Public things like Facebook and MySpace worry me more than any message board ever would. I use Facebook, but not a whole lot, and I am very careful of the info I put out there for the world to see.

I put more info out on facebook than I do on forums. Sure someone could probably track me down if they wanted. But if they are reading enough of my posts to know where I live... they are probably reading enough to know not to even attempt to come past the dogs uninvited.

Awww Renee, you're nice too! Smkie is just... well, you can just tell from smkie's posts, that she is like the most laid back person you can meet. Does she know that bad attitudes exist?? :D

But I've never seen your bad side Renee. Do you have one? Or is that a secret? :D

*sigh* god I love chaz.... you guys rock.
Yeah, Chaz rocks. Freedom of speech is actually ALLOWED here! Who knew??

I don't worry about it. I even use my name for my screen name...and the city/state where I live...

If someone feels the urge to stalk me, they can. Just hope they know if they show up at my house it's not going to be pleasant for them whatsoever. :)

I had a stalker once. A real one, that was brave enough to break into my house at 2 AM with my brother sleeping on the couch while he was visiting. Since my husband was deployed it was ugly, seriously like this guy followed me from my house every day for about 3 months.
Then the break in occurred. So two AM, me, my brother, and 2 kids are sleeping and the front door opens. I heard it, my brother heard it...and well, we're of the "armed" persuasion. So Mr. weirdo stalker got the scare of his life coming in to two people with guns pointed at him. He ran, the MP's never caught him...but the stalking stopped.

I have been online for a long time. I don't bother with Facebook or MySpace and don't really give out much if any personal information online. I have been on BB's and chat rooms and never had any problems. I think one can be cautious but still enjoy BB's etc.
