What do you do with your dogs during the day? I'm just curious because I've seen a lot of posts talking about how horrible it is to leave a dog outside in a fenced yard all day, which I don't understand.

Charlie stays outside all day while I'm at work, unless it is too cold, too hot, or raining, and then he usually goes to doggie daycare. He loves it outside in his yard with all his toys. When I get home I go out and play ball or frisbee with him and he doesn't want to come in after that and I usually have to make him come in at bedtime.

So I was just wondering, first, is there a problem with this and second, if so, what does everyone else do with their dogs all day?

Mine stay in their outdoor dog kennel during the day while I am gone. From there they get to watch the wildlife in the ponds behind my house (ducks, geese, blue heron, muskrat, crows, redwing black birds, gold finches and whatever else is back there), they can watch people walk by on the path between our property and the ponds, they can watch people and cars go down the street across the pond, they can watch people working in their yards both on my street and another street, they get to watch construction workers and really anything else that goes on. They usually have bones and toys in their kennel to occupy themselves with as well. If they wouldnt be there they would be locked in their crates in the basement (coldest place i the house) with a toy or two - - not very exciting...

What if someone walked by and decided their kids would love a little dog like Herschel?

We exercise the heck out of our dog and then crate him so he can take a nap. A few hours later, we do the same thing (during lunch).

In the winter, if there is too much snow on the ground to adequately exercise him then he goes to indoor doggy daycare.

That's why everything is padlocked ;)
Yep! I keep my gate chained and padlocked. And I don't really worry about that because most people are afraid of Charlie anyway....just because he's a large GSD that likes to bark at passers by. Plus, I know just about all my neighbors and none of them would steal him, and they would let me know if anybody tried to mess with him. When he was smaller some of the neighborhood kids would go up to the fence to pet him. I went over and talked to them and asked them not to and have had no further problems....of course, they're all scared of him now!

Magnus is outside in his outdoor kennel all day. And we too padlock both of our gates and his kennel. Maisey stays inside in her kennel when we are not home. That doesn't happen very often because there is usually one of us home. Jesse, Paco, Teddy, Petrie, Molly and Fox all have 4' X 4' Ex-Pens they stay in when we are not home. The pens have toys and water and beds in them for the dogs. Plus they can play with each other. The three girls stay together, 2 of the boys stay together and Jesse has his own because he likes to fight with everyone.

I leave them in the house...they usually just sleep. JB, of course right now is in a crate when I leave, but Chloe is out and about. Greg or I go home on our lunch to let them out to potty and play a little. They do really well now.:)

Kai stays in the kitchen. If the weather is nice, Zoey stays on the deck. If the weather is crappy, she stays in the bathroom.

I've always been with my dogs , but when I did work at our business the dogs were fine . We lived in the country on 8 wooded acres and I always left their " kennel " door open ( a door to their garage ! ) I really don't know if I would have done this in today's age !! Back then , the only fenced in areas were in the city . Times have changed !
