Some of you may remember, my SIL-to-be took the corgi we found last year. Well she gains weight very easily. She is wanting to put her on a weight control food, but I didn't think she would need a weight control food. I thought maybe if she just fed her less. I know sometimes I have to change how much I feed Zoe during different times of the year.

So to those of you who have Corgi's, how much do they weigh? and how much do you feed them daily? and what kind of food are they on?

I'm just assuming the corgi is a Pembroke because.. they are more popular, lol. However, I feed my Cardgian boy Innova. He currently weighs around 35 lbs which is right in the middle of the average weight for a grown male Cardigan. I feed him Innova Adult food, which is very rich so he doesn't eat a lot a day.

I'd suggest the dog was taken to the vet and given instructions on how to control her weight and try to get her weight back under control, it's really really bad on her little legs and health in general!

Corgis can *look* at food and gain weight, I swear!

those of you who have Corgi's, how much do they weigh?
Izzy weighs 18.5 pounds.
Frodo weighs 23 pounds, though he could stand to gain another pound or two.

how much do you feed them daily?
Izzy eats about 4/5 of a cup per day.
Frodo eats about 1 1/4 cups per day.

what kind of food are they on?
Izzy is on Canidae ALS.
Frodo is on Canidae Lamb and Rice.

Just wanted to note that both of my dogs get fed this much and are very active. We do off leash running at least 3 times a week for up to an hour or more and have walks on the other days. When I hurt my back really bad and I couldn't really exercise them Izzy was eating about 1/2 cup a day and she was gaining weight.

I would say no weight control food, just less food (make sure it's good quality kibble) and more exercise. Corgis are the masters of begging for food and acting like they're starving, I assure you they aren't.

I completely understand that, I have a beagle who tries to trick me, she will act like my fiance didn't feed her and try to get me to feed her as well.

Yeah I am sure she needs to eat less food. Cuz she was feeding a bit more than you said, she was going by the bag. But I told her that it isn't always best to go by the bag.

And Im not sure how to tell the difference between types of corgis, I just know she showed up on my doorstep and no one claimed her, so I found her a new home. And she has adorable ears because one stands up and one doesnt.

Ada weighs 21lbs, and she wats 2/3 C per day, Canidae ALS. And yes, she's an active dog.

Corgis are often overfed, which is why I feel they are often overweight - they dont' need much to keep them happy and healthy! (Well, most corgis would disagree with me on the "happy" part of that statement... ;) )

you can add green beans to the diet

A 1/2 can of green beans 2x per day will help to fill your little ( big) one up!
Not many calories at all.

If she won't eat the green beans - put a tiny amount of parmesian cheese on top... then, see if she will eat it.

We get many dogs here at our little Doggie Hotel...

I wouldn't use the canned green beans myself, there is usally a lot of sodium in them. Use the frozen ones if you use them.

I agree. I used fresh green beans when I was giving them to Izzy.

Fozzie is half Cardigan, and he weighs about the same as a Cardi... approximately 35 lbs.

Weight is not what you should be looking at. Look at the shape of the dog. Does she have a waist? A tuck? Corgis don't tend to have a defined waste, but there should be a bit of a waist, and a tuck. You should be able to feel the ribs if you run your fingers over them.

A friend of mine had issues with their Corgi gaining weight, and he got back down to a healthy weight after being fed Natural Balance. I wouldn't feed a "weight loss" kibble, typically they are just packed with fillers. As long as she's on a high quality kibble, just decrease her intake. More than anything, it's important to cut back her food, measure it out every day, and feed only healthy, low calorie treats. Activity is also VERY important. They should take her on a couple brisk walks every day, and have as many play sessions with her as possible through out the day.
