So, I've gotten in the habit of feeding Hudson a mid-day snack out of a toy. He's usually not hungry enough in the morning to eat half of his daily food intake, so I give him 1/4 in the morning in a dish, 1/4 in the afternoon from a toy, and 1/2 in the evening from a dish. It seems to work great.
So, after much experimenting with different toys, we now use two different ones.
One toy is called a Busy Buddy. Here's a link: http://www.busybuddytoys.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=2 Hudson LOVES eating kibble from this thing! It's relatively easy for him now, though it did take a few days for him to figure it out. He flips it over with his nose, and 2 or 3 pieces of kibble come out. He eats them and then flips it again. You should see him flipping the toy over and over making a line through the bedroom. He only plays with toys in the bedroom (his rule, not mine, LOL!) When he reaches a doorway, he picks up the toy, brings it back to the middle of the room and starts over. It is absolutely hysterical.
The other toy I feed him from when he's particularly hyper and needs a good challenge is called the Molecuball. Link: http://www.amazon.com/Our-Pets-Molecuball-5/dp/B0002ZADY6 This one is much harder for him because if he pushes it with his nose, it just slides. There's only one hole in it, so it's not so easy! He has to get quite physical, practically jumping on it to make it turn over until food can come out of the hole.
He gets such a kick out of doing this with these toys, and I think it gives him a good mental challenge. We tried a Kong, but that was much too easy for him unless I smeared it all with peanut butter. That got VERY messy...
Any of you feed your dogs out of a toy like this???
