A lot of sighthound people use flirt poles to build drive in lurecoursing dogs, with a plastic bag as the bait.

My dog could run for 10 miles a day. I could not, and I don't have a great off leash area. A treadmill would keep us both sane. Unfortunately, he does not like them, and we are currently driving each other mad.
I'd love to have a treadmill - I don't know who would benefit more, Kharma or Tallulah. There's no way any one human could possibly walk/run enough for either of those two. I've seen Kharma literally go at a full gallop for over an hour in the pasture.
I agree. A "normal" person just couldn't possibly find the time or amounts of stamina it takes to tire some dogs out.

We have ours and I honestly only use it in nasty weather. There are times here when it gets below zero in the double digits and stays that way for days/weeks. Orson doesn't want to be out any more than I do!

So just "getting off our be-hinds" is not the issue. As a matter of fact, I use the treadmill myownself in the winter :D

Treadmills for dogs - stupid imo.

How about getting off your be-hinds and going for a walk... take a ball and do some running activities.

Get both you AND the dog fit.

Spring/flirt - mucho fun for any breed and good exercise!

What happens when it gets below zero?
I'm NOT walking in that!
My dog will have a treadmill.
It's NOT stupid. LOTS of reputable dog people have treadmills for their dogs to keep them in shape year round.
My trainer uses one with her GSDs all the time.

I'd like to see you try and wear Izzy out with a ball :lol-sign:
I think you would be very disappointed.

Or maybe you could suspend such hyper-critical judgement for a moment, huh? If you don't use it, don't use it. But keep the holier-than-thou remarks to yourself. That's not what this is about.

I really want a breaking stick but don't know where to get one, it would really help with my mom's wheaten terrier who DOESN'T LET GO during fights....

I may try and make a spring pole for Milo, not sure yet.

I am not sure if I will ever get a tread mill. Maybe sometime in the future.

I can see how they are useful for some dogs. Having a pittie, there is no way in hell I could jog/run as much as he can. We go for long walks, and when I get back he is even more hyper than before we left. The only time I get him to tire out is when we go deep in the woods and I let him run free. He will run back and forth back and forth.... over and over again at top speed. Its like zoomies that last 2 or more hours.

You can either get one from www.pbrc.net or I can give you the email of a man who makes some great one! Or give me a day and I might can find an extra one lying around that I don't need (I have one in every room just about & also out back hanging up against the side of the house).

I was a little surprised to come back and see this thread at 3 pages. Cool! I'm just reading and taking it all in. Trying to decide whether I want to enter the debates or not. I think for now I'll just say that if you truly want to see aggression, try going a while without giving Terra an outlet like flirtpole for her high drive. LOL!

ETA: Mia, I had to raise mine to the 2-feet-on-the-ground level because if it's low enough, Terra will chew the hide until she saws off half of it, and then she'll eat it. Little %@#$&. :rofl1:
LMAO! Is her name "Nom Yummy"? :D (if you haven't seen that commercial, you need to! lol)

No, I haven't seen the commercials, but lots of Lolcats. LOL! Milos Mommy, if you're the least bit handy, you can make a breaking stick from a hammer handle. I made some by cutting about 3-4" off the narrow end and then dremeling it down to a wedge and sanding smooth.

I only WISH it were that simple! But there's no way I can keep up with Raja. The dog is like the energizer bunny on speed. She is SUPER high-energy. Not to mention, summers in Texas get well over a hundred degrees with about 100% humidity, and I have to be really careful since she has a very thick coat.

I don't have a treadmill yet, but someday... Someday, I hope to get one. For now, I take her out to one of the empty pastures that the longhorns aren't occupying and let her run out some of her zoomies. But keep in mind that this longhorn pasture is not right outside my house. I have to drive her out to the next town. I also take her to my mom's house and let her swim in the pond, as that has proven to be one of the best ways to exercise her. This is also the next town over.

There's nothing wrong with driving out of town to exercise her, but I can only spend so long out there. And every day?

Flirtpole- yep...my girls love it.

Springpole- I built one a while back, just because I wanted to try it out. My hound used it once or twice but hasn't since. They aren't all that interested in the rope toy that I have for it.

Treadmill- I don't have one, but would.

Breakstick- No. I personally wouldn't use a breakstick on any breed but a "gripping" breed, of course that's just my opinion though. My girls have gotten into quite a few scuffles in the yard and it's certainly not something i'd want to try and get my hand into...i'd more than likely get bitten. They do a lot of biting, snapping, and snarling, they don't hold on like a bulldog/terrier.

I need to get a breakstick. Oz gets a hold and doesn't let go for anything. We have to choke him off or grab something handy lying around.

He has a flirtpole, but I'd love to build him a spring pole. And his flirtpole is broken and I need to replace the rope and toy on it...

I dont have a break stick. The only time Reggin snapped at pebbles was when my mom gave him a bone and let her pug AND my pebbles crowd him and try to steal his bone. He snapped and it did not phase pebbles. She took him on with bared teeth. I had to pull her away from Reggin. He never bit her. She grabbed him though. In her eyes, she is bigger and much tougher than he is.

They get along extremely well. If a fight did start, she would be the aggressor. I guess I should have one, not that I would ever have to use it, but it would be there. It would more so come in handy when we are out for walks. On several occasions we have had aggressive dogs charge us from a distance. Most of them run off when my fiance yells at them, but you never know.

Yep, I use one with my Basenjis. It's just a fishing pole with a 10 foot cord that has a plastic bag tied to the end. They love to chase it. I have never used a breaking stick though. I grab one by the hind legs and yank back quickly. That will break them apart then I can get in there and get them separated.

Buster can also be hard to excercise.
He really isn't into zoomies, you let him offleash in a big field and he may trot around a bit but thats all. Unless Mac is there to play with him. He rarely plays with toys.

If I want him to actually run fast, I have to be on a bike, considering his DA, this is something I'm not willing to do to often.

He's an energy conservationst, its in his nature and in his breed. He isn't going to race around using energy when he could be saving it for something he needs it for.

As for how long he can really go for, as long as I ask. I've only seen him worn out once, after a 3 hours walk, mostly offleash in 40C heat when he was quite unfit.

Sorry, but I still think they are stupid, and yeah, it is my opinion.

If I have to take Bodhi out for 2 hours minimum and throw the ball constantly and make her run, jump, swim and climb, that's what I do, because that's part of owning a dog.

What's next, buying them a playstation to stimulate their minds?

You might not like my opinion, but it's mine. I never said it's a bad idea, I just think it's a STUPID idea. When the nations of the world are becoming OBESE, we buy treadmills for our dogs.... hahaha.

If you want one, you get one, it doesn't hurt. I just think it's stoooopid. Like people who dye themselves orange because they think it looks like a nice tan, or buying other innane gadgets that make life easier when really, it's almost as easy to just do the task in hand.

Some gadgets rock.

My opinion is, I enjoy exercising my dog. It's no crime ;)
