As long as you buy it from a vet or a reputable pet store/website. You need Revolution, Advantix or Frontline Plus. Never ever buy it OTC from the grocery stores or pet shops. Never ever use Hartz brands (they have killed animals). To go along with your worms question, tapeworms come from the dog swallowing a flea. If your dog has fleas, deworm him, if you see a tapeworm segment, treat for fleas too.

Advantix does work well but if your dog is buddy buddy with cats then don't use it. It'll kill a cat.

I went to the dog.com site and looked at the chart and I dont think it is very accurate. I called Frontline because thats what we are using and Grizzley is covered in fleas and has had up to 3 ticks attached to him at one time. They said that the product does not repel fleas or ticks, that the ticks will latch on and will die within 36 hours and then eventually fall off and that fleas will jump on him and bite him but they die within 18 hours. That site says that frontline does repel all ticks.

We picked frontline cause the vet reccomended it over advantix but I was more interested in advantix because it is supposed to repel fleas and ticks and protect against mosquitos which frontline does not. I think the vet got more money from us buying frontline over advantix.

Anyone out there that has compared the 2 and seen that one worked better over the other? We want to switch to advantix but now I see it can kill cats? We have a cat but they are not buddy buddy they may sniff each other but that about it right now.

the risk from the advantix comes if the dog and cat say lay next to eachother or the cat likes to groom the dog...if not, your safe.

i prefer K9 Advantix, the frontline plus doesnt seem to work in this area of ct

Totally depends where you are.. In some areas fleas and more so ticks are more resistant to one product than the other. Though I hear in some areas of NY neither is working at all lately. Ask other people locally which they use.. Should tell you which is working better in your area right now.

are you in a very woodsy area? We have 2.5 acres of mostly woods and then I take him hiking in the mountains almost everyday. Just curious to see if your situation is similar to mine.

Neither product repels fleas. All it does is kill the fleas that are on the animal. I know Advantage claims 12 - 24 hours and it seems to work well around here so that's my personal favorite. Plus they got that awesome lab puppy as their spokes-dog.
