What does everyone use?

GAH - I am having such a horrible time finding something to use for Harleigh. I've been using BOG for a 1-1.5 year(s), but I don't know if its going to cut it this year.

I just have NO clue what will work though....

-Advantage doesn't do anything for ticks
-Frontline Plus, Harleigh had a bad reaction to it 2 times, so thats out. Plus, it sucks here in FL. lol
-Comfortis doesn't do anything for ticks.
-Bio Spot is toxic to cats and I've heard of bad reactions
-K9 Advantix is really toxic to cats, but I've heard it works wonders. However, I just don't think I can risk it :(
-Frontline Topspot, haven't used it and its hard to come by, but its Frontline and if Harleigh had a reaction to the other one... wouldn't it be the same?

I would use Advantix in a heartbeat, BUT I just don't want to risk it with Harleigh and Phoebe being BFF's and playing/taking naps/etc together all the time. Is it toxic even after absorbed into the dogs skin? I'd just be so nervous about using it.

So really.. that leaves me with Frontline Topspot, unless someone else can think of something else?!?! :)

Have you tried Advantix or just Advantage?

Nevermind, I suck at reading. Yes advantix is toxic to cats.

Revolution kills ticks (though I don't know with what efficacy) but it's a heartworm preventative as well and I don't know if you want to switch both.

I would say to try spray Frontline but it's STILL on backorder >.< Sometimes if a dog has a reaction to Frontline it's really the carrier agent in the spot-on formula that sets them off. The spray frontline doesn't have that in it.

I use Frontline because I get it free from the reps. I also use Advantix on Gavroche during the summer for mosquitoes, but yeah, it's toxic to cats and I wouldn't risk it.

I have never had trouble finding the Frontline TopSpot - I buy it from dog.com currently. The Plus part is another drug and the fipronil that's in both is considered pretty safe, so we just use the Top Spot and have for years. :)

Are you having a tick problem? We don't have an issue with them here in my area (Central Florida), except in a few of the very wooded areas, so I only have to worry about fleas. I know there are parts of N Florida where ticks are a problem. In that case, I'm not sure what to do. Maybe Comfortis and a Preventic collar (contains amitraz, same drug as Mitaban used for demodectic mange)? Not my top choice, but maybe an option if you're running out of ideas. It says not to use on cats, but I didn't see a warning about transmission like with Advantix ...

I can't really say if I am or not, LOL. I found one on Harleigh, but that was after we had went hiking in a heavily wooded area along the Suwannee River. Thats the first tick she's ever got, but it may have been because I hadn't upped her garlic back yet. They are SO hard to find on a black dog too!

She's been on Comfortis before, but the past two times it hasn't kept the fleas off of her? I don't know why. Before that it worked great, so I don't know if it was just bad pills or what. Someone else mentioned the Preventic collar too. I'll have to look into it...

For now I'm going to get her back on the higher dose of BOG that we use during summer (I decrease it quite a bit in the winter) and I'm also going to try this product to see if it works.

Thanks everyone! :)

I used a similar product that was lavender and cedar oil - worked great but seemed to stain the white fur on my dogs??
