Our 4 month old Yorkie had a tick about two weeks ago and we removed it safely, and now we need to make a decision about putting him on flea and tick preventatives. Our vet recommended Frontline Plus, but I've also heard that Frontline, K9, and similar flea and tick medications can be very bad for dogs, especially for a puppy so young.

Do I have to put Winston on a flea and tick medication? The dog that I had as a child lived inside and had a flea collar for summers and we never had a problem with ticks or fleas. I've actually never even seen a flea.

Now we live in downtown Boston and there aren't that many grassy areas that Winston can even run around in, even though I know he can still get ticks and fleas. I just want to know if it is absolutely necessary, or if there is a safer and equally effective method, instead of Frontline and its competitors.
