I have concluded that Sarama hates flax seed. Though she's never been precisely a 'good eater' she's always been a 'eater'. But for a while now she's been turing her nose up at her food. So I ran an experiment, dropping things and taking them out from her diet.

I have discovered that what she hates are any suppliments containing flax seed, and that's what she's refusing to eat.

They didn't seem to make her sick when she ate them.

Has she just developed a disliking or is she not eating it for a reason?

Ideas? Most suppliments contain the stuff, though she eats good enough food so I guess she doesn't really need it.

But strikes me as a little strange.

Some people don't like certain foods, some animals don't like certain foods. :)

It's really good for her so if you can trick her into eating it that would be great. Does her food contain flax seed?

We top our dog's kibble with ground flax and they love it. I guess they're like the kids that enjoy broccoli?

As far as I know, her food does not. I'll have to check the bags. She ate it willingly enough mixed in with her food for months . . . but now she won't touch her food if there's any in there. And that's got to be it . . . took me a week to figure it out, taking things in and out of her food, but that's what it is. I'd love to find a way to trick her though . . . hmmm . . .

The Honest Kitchen's Embark (dehydrated raw) has a significant amount of flaxseed. It is expensive, but we saw results within a month or so.

Do you feed flaxseed for her coat?

I prefer salmon oil, most definitely. Have you tried that, instead?
She gets salmon oil too . . .

I don't really feed flax seed intentionally . . . its just the base of two other suppliments that I do feed.

You don't want to feed too much Flax Seed or she might break Barry Bonds HR Record LOL

Or developed problems with too much plant-based fiber and become an allergy prone dog. Notice how the grain-free market simply removed grain fiber and replaced it with....more fiber. Clever and catchy marketing IMO.

Sounds like a smart dog with good intuition. I wouldn't be concerned about it really. I wouldn't try to to trick her into eating it as suggested. If she doesn't want it she doesn't want it and I would let it go.

Oddly enough, she started eating it again on her own. I tried after a week or so to put some Missing Link (which has flax in it) in her food, and she was happy to eat it. So . . . its something of a mystery to me what her no-flax phase was about. But I'll keep an eye out for her developing an allergy to it. As I noted before, most of the suppliments use it as a base, so it wasn't really an intentional thing to feed it to her . . it was just part of the package.
