My husband and I purchased a pug from a breeder night before last and he is so great! We notice the next day however that he had a small, red (possibly bleeding) protrusion sticking out of his hiney:eek: . My friend suggests this might be a hernia/ hemorroids. We took him to Petsmart and in passing, asked a doctor about it who said the same and prescribed 3 days on Preparation H and if it wasn't better to come and see her. Have you all ever dealt with sucha thing? I am a new pet owner and love our pug sooo much and we've only had him two nights:) ! He is 7 weeks old. Can anyone help put my racing mind at ease...

I would contact your breeder ASAP so they know what is taking place and get him back to the vet ASAP. I would be concerned with the beginning of a rectal prolapse or a possible ruptured anal gland. 7 weeks is VERY young for a pug to leave it's mother so extra care is critical to make sure everything will turn out for the better. I wish you luck :)

I agree with Showpug ....I hope Petsmart wasn't the " breeder"

Oh no, Petsmart wasn't the breeder. This was through a pug breeder in Round Rock that I got online. She had several adult pugs so perhaps she has been through this before. Perhaps calling her would be a good idea. I'm so worried...

Sorry, it sounds like a fishy breeder. Especially selling the dog so young. Did you get health guarantees?

Get an opinion from your regular vet. If you don't have one now is the time to find one you like!

You defiantly need to call her so she is at least informed on the issue. Most reputable breeders want to know if something is going wrong with one of their puppies. Take your puppy to the vet today, preferably one with a better reputation than the vets at petsmart! Try not to worry too much. Is your pup having normal bowel movements? Could you possibly post a picture for me to look at? I have pugs and have also worked at a vet clinic for about 5 years. I have seen rectal prolapse and anal gland dissorders so I may be able to give more insight if I see a pic.

Good advice above....I may be wrong, but I feel Vet grads should find a clinic or any private practice other than Petsmart. I feel they may be the dregs. Could be wrong...but................

Bubba has been having normal bowel movements from what I know of what "normal" should be. They were darker yesterday but they were a very good color and softer this morning. I think he's getting better with the baby wipes after going number 2 and the Prep H I've been using on him. It even looks like the thing is shrinking. I'm trying to post a picture and I hope they come out on here. Thank you all so much for helping me through this. You are very much appreciated.

Bubba is adorable! You will love having a pug, there is nothing that quite compares ;) I could not tell much from the picture as it was kind of blurry. If you think it is improving and not bothering him than I would watch it very closely. From what I could see, it does not look like an anal gland or rectal prolapse. It could be a pustual from an infection etc. I have never heard of dogs having hemmoroids, so that is foreign to me. Either way, watch him closely and take care.:)

Thanks showpug! You have been great and I will continue to watch it. As I've said, it seems to be getting smaller and kind of scabbing up which leads me to believe that the worst is over. I will continue to keep an eye on it and take him to a vet if needed. You're pugs are adorable!

Looks like the hemorrhoid is drying up on its own. We've been putting the Prep H religiously and I believe that relief keeps him from scooting and irritating it further. It has begun to scab at the end and is shrinking. I feel tons better and expect it to be gone soon.

You are treating the symptom but not really finding out what the problem is. That could be dangerous in the long run. Please call the breader and find out if the puppy had previous health problems.

I'm happy that Bubba is feeling better! He is adorable! The second pic made me laugh. Only because I can see his face turn back as if to say "HUH  " lol

Oh and also I was thinking that if he had some diarrhea, that may have just irritated him a bit.

Thanks for the concern guys. He has an appt. with the vet on the 15 of Dec. so we will be sure to bring up the hemorrhoid. Called the breeder and she didn't have too much to contribute accept for consenting to what we are already doing. He's doing fine however and I'm sure he'll be ok until the vet appt. Avenlee...yeah he didn't too much appreciate that picture of his bum!
