What do you all think of feeding the puppy at night 30 minutes before he goes to sleep ? Roy eats his dinner and instantly he's energy spikes 100 folds. I am being told that he needs to rest after the meal for proper digestion and since he's in the crate most of the morning, I'd hate to put him back after only 1 hour of being out of it.

I agree with Gallien. I try to feed my girls early (they're all completely housetrained) to make sure they don't wake me up very early to go to the bathroom.

I was told that it takes about 4-5 hours for food to digest. If that is true and he eats at 10pm, would he need to go before 3-4 am? I wake up at 4.30 am, 5 am at the latest, would it be too much for him to hold it for an 1 hour or so ?

I also would not feed him that late. I think it would be natural for him to have to go before early AM on that schedule. if you still feed twice a day..try early morning and then maybe around 6. but there is really no need for him to have to eat at 10pm. :)

Well, Roy is in the crate for most of the morning while I am at work. By the time I am back, it's 5.15 pm. I feed him and once he has eaten he runs around and jumps like crazy and I do enjoy playing with him. But I was told that he has to rest after he eats. I just feel bad having to put him back in the crate when was out only for 1 hour. So, I thought I'd let him play and run from 5.15pm until 10pm or so, give him dinner and then he can go to sleep.

A dog only needs to rest after food so they are not sick, most dogs dont have a problem, and if he is just playing at home, then i dont see a problem its just better not to feed a dog and then take it for a long run

I guess I misunderstood what "rest" meant. I took it "don't move around at all" :) ... I was just concerned about bloating as he is a GSD. I'll just stick to the current schedule. Thanks to all for the help

Thats ok, personally i havent had a prob, bloat is usually caused more by eating dry kibble, or a dog tanking up with water after eating, someone with more experence about your breed may be able to help more, but it really depends on the dog, sorry i couldnt be of more help

also sometimes high protein in the food can get them all pumped up and full of energy.

Mine eat at 7am and again at 4pm. The DO seem energized after a meal, and I do keep them toned down for atleast an hour.

I feed at 5:00am, 3:00 PM and right before bed.
I do not exericse or play for an hour after feeding, though I don't crate Dante.
In fact, it's lunch time for Dante :)

another feeding question

My 8 month old spaniel won't eat in the morning until about after 11am and sometimes as late as 2pm. I still put out his breakfast at 7:30AM every day but he will never eat in the morning and only eats later or after playing outside for over an hour. I've tried free feeding and taking away his food after 15 minutes and still he won't eat. This can throw off his dinner schedule too. Is 8 or 9PM too late or too early to feed him. Should i put out his breakfast earlier? He doesn't seem to have any issues with going to the bathroom during the night so should I not worry about it? He's an active dog but not very interested in his meals unless he's just come from 2 hours at the park. Is that weird or unhealthy? Also, I feed him Innova dry with canned and sometimes cooked chicken and beef and he only eliminates once or twice a day.
