How fast do your dogs pick up new commands?

Summer is wowing me with how quick she picks up things. I swear if she gets the command once then she has it 90% of the time. Beau is pretty good too, with just about 3 times he's got a command down good. Nard, Rose, and Trey are harder. Trey takes several sessions to get something but one he has it, it's there forever. Rose gets things right away but it's a constant battle to keep her from shutting down. The whole time you train her you have to praise no matter what. She is just the most sensitive dog that getting far is hard. I don't want to push her too far so we mostly practice things within her comfort zone. And Nard's attention span is so short it takes a while for him to pay attention long enough to get something to click. I'm just working on building focus with him. We'll see what happens from there but I think he's always going to be a challenge.

Depends what he gets out of it, he knows how to ask to come in, he knew that after the first repitition. But it took a LONG time to teach him to rollover.

Mac only takes a few reps each time, but thats because she wants to do it just to have something to do.

My first sheltie was similar to Trey. He was pretty laid back and took a little bit to learn, but once he knew it, he always remembered.

My new girl is very eager to learn. She picks up new stuff very quickly and I better have something for her to learn all the time. She's like a sponge and ready all the time.

usually 3-5 tries. I've gotten better timing as time has gone on so the dogs learn faster.

I remember it taking two years to teach Scooter to bark on command... he did it so infrequently. But other stuff was cake.

Pit almost immediately. I shape something and once he gets where I was heading, he's got it and will repeat it over and over.

Zero responds better to luring, takes a fair bit longer as he doesn't really offer behaviours but once he gets it, he's pretty golden.

Dance: Almost immediately. It doesn't take her very long to catch onto things at all. Show her what you want once, and chances are she's got it. Sometimes it takes about 3 tries.

Spring: If she wasn't so food/toy obsessed, she'd catch on a lot quicker. She lacks focus. Takes her anywhere between 10 and 20 tries to catch onto something, depending on the difficulty level.

Keira: She's not as eager as the Tollers, and doesn't care much about pleasing people, so that makes it a little hard. Keira's all about her and what's going to make her happy. So it usually takes at least 15 tries of something before she catches on.

Jack: I show him what I want once, and usually he catches on.

Micki: He's very smart and willing, and will catch on almost immediately. But doesn't try too hard.

Mini: She would rather not.

Kyra: Depends on if there's a ball involved. If she has to do something first before she gets her ball, after she knows what I want out of her she's got it. If there's no ball...then she'd rather be off looking for a ball.

Kharma and Bimmer . . . well, really with those two it's more just a matter of telling/asking at any given time more than them learning commands.

"Where are your manners" is about the only consistent key phrase, and Bimmer taught me that one and then taught it to Kharma and then Tallulah.

Tallulah is definitely a work in progress. She's just now reaching the age where she's got a legitimate attention span. Once she pays attention, though, she's got it. Now, whether she'll focus on it the next time . . . but she KNOWS it. Silly Terrier. :wall:
