I've read posts here where many have their meals in front of the computer . Are family meals a thing of the past ? Maybe someone could make a poll .

We have family meals together....sometimes it is just me and the kids due to hubby's work schedule, but I think it is important to eat together anyway.
Since both kids are in school......... they eat breakfeast at home, but I don't have time to eat then, but I think it is very important to feed your OWN kids and not rely on school for breakfeast....then they both eat lunch at school, but We all eat together at supper.... Unless Hubby is working and then it is just me and the kids. :)

My family has never ate supper together. But,.. I don't have a normal family..mine is quite disfunctional. Heck, not even for christmas and thanksgiving dinners do we sit down at a table. I take my meal into my room, my mom infront of her TV, etc.

When I was in high school family meals became a thing of the past as my schedule got hectic with all of the extracurricular activities.

Now, when hubby and I eat dinner, it's almost always together. Sometimes it's a nice dinner actually at the dining room table, otherwise it's on the couch, snuggling together watching t.v. :)

We eat wherever, sometimes at the table sometimes in front of the TV or Computer. Special Events, is always family at the table.

I grew up with family dinners being the norm, but as us kids have gotten older and moved out and such, it's not so regular anymore though. Even though I'm back home, I get home late enough most nights that dinner has been put away and I'm left to zap a plate in the microwave. But we try to all sit down together whenever possible.

My fiancee and I usually sit cross legged around our huge coffee table and eat together. Every now and then if I/Him are really into something on the computer like work, ect.. we'll just grab our food and eat here. Not usually though :)

Glad to see some " family values " here . Our evening meals were always important . Never at the same hour because of schedules .This was really the only time all 5 of us were together and talked . To this day my kids cringe when I say " Well, now , what happened in school today ?" ( Mocking their Dad , LOL!) . Classical music was in the background and I treasure the memories .

Most of the time we don't eat together. My mom and I usually eat at the table together. My brother takes the food down to his room. And most of the time, my dad is still at work when we eat dinner but even when he is home, he usually eats on the couch.

We do sometimes eat together though. It just depends. Now that we have a TV in the kitchen though my dad usually sits at the table with us, lol before his excuse was always that some type of sport was on or whatever. But...yeah, it's never really been important in my family.

we always tried to have fam dinners, but my parents often werent home from work yet.

Now whenever i come home from school, we always try to have a nice family dinner :)

Here at school though, i eat in front of the comp...i would much rather be eating with my fam though :(

Just wanted to add that it would be unheard of for ANYONE in the fam to eat their dinner somewhere else in the house while others are eating at the table...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ glad you posted that ! If everyone's home , no one should be excused from the table . Especially teenagers . That was my point . I must admit .... when the kids were gone , our meals became different . Some times together ... some times not . But to me .... when family is home , it should me family time .

Once in a blue moon we will. I don't think we did it when me and my sister were children either.

Really our family dinners where we're all at the same table are just for special occassions. Like a holiday, celebration, whatever.

Though we do go out a lot, so I guess that's almost the same thing.

I do plan on trying to have family dinner when I have kids, though. Don't know how well that'll go.

lol, the joy of being a parent....you make the rules ;)

I think i grew up really valuing any time i got to spend with my parents (its not like they were absent from my life - they werent, they just worked a lot)

Now, whenever i see my mom or dad eating alone (if they got home late and everyone else has eaten), i always sit down with them to keep 'em company. I know it means a lot to them especially since they dont get to see me often now that im in college.

My family never ate together. My mother and I are on a "the less time I have to spend with you the better" schedule.

My parents are divorced, and I live with my Mom now.

My Dad used to insist that we all eat together, and he played s m o o t h j a z z!!!!!!!! :< It felt too forced, and like a routine/tradition much more than actually wanting to talk. Because we usually didn't talk much.

My Mom let's us eat when we want to, and where we want to... it's difficult, because I'm vegetarian, and they eat different meals than me. But we talk a LOT more and spend much more time together & do things more than I did with my Dad.

If eating dinner is the only time a family can/will talk to each other and hang out, it makes sense for that to be important. But I do things with my sisters and my Mom all the time, and we talk all the time... we don't really need a special, mandatory, scheduled time to eat together at one table.

My husband and I eat together every night at 6 pm in the dining room. Then sit there after dishes cleared for a chat of days events no TV !
Daughter and hubby and their 7 kids eat in dining room at their home to catch up on what everyone is doing.
Son and wife and two children the same.
I raised them this way and they have stuck to it.
I think this is very important for famlies to set aside time with no interferance and discuss the days events and keep connected.
More people should try it. You might find out what if anything is troubling your children and what they are accomplishing.
